LEDs target video display applications.

Press Release Summary:

Featuring black packaging, MultiLED offers contrast in video displays with typical luminance of 2,000 cd/m² and pixel spacing of 5-7 mm. Color black appears truly deep black on display, which gives pictures depth and creates 3D effects. White point for MultiLED in white package is 2,000 mcd. Based on chips featuring Thinfilm and ThinGaN technology, both have 6-lead design, ensuring effective heat removal and enabling currents of 15 mA per color to be achieved.

Original Press Release:

New Generation of MultiLEDs are Available in Black Packaging for Higher Contrast and in White for Higher Brightness

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is launching two new MultiLEDs for LED video displays. The two new MultiLEDs are targeted at high resolution video display applications that require high brightness and high color fidelity from all viewing angles. In addition, the jet black package version with a higher contrast level and depth of color is ideal for indoor applications that are exposed to a wide dynamic range of ambient lighting, such as at a rock concert where the lighting can change quickly from ultra dark to the blinding flash of spotlights.

The MultiLED with black packaging offers particularly impressive contrast in video displays with a typical luminance of 2,000 cd/m² and a pixel spacing of 5 to 7 mm. The color black appears on the display as a truly deep black, which gives pictures great depth and creates 3D effects. "Achieving a consistent black level has been the greatest hurdle so far in presenting the color black properly. Pictures will now have much more intensive depth to them," said Dr. Volker Harle, LED Marketing Director at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors.

The white point for the new MultiLED in the white package is at 2,000 mcd. Both new versions are based on high-power chips featuring the latest Thinfilm and ThinGaN technology. The MultiLEDs are manufactured in very narrow tolerances in terms of brightness and color to ensure homogeneous screen display, and the display colors remain constant from all viewing angles. These extremely bright multi-chip LEDs also benefit from their 6-lead design, ensuring effective heat removal and enabling currents of 15 mA per color to be achieved, even at an ambient temperature of 85°C.
