RLL Fixture From [P2] Saves Energy & Improves Safety In Stairwells
Yorba Linda, Calif. — A new LED based fixture from Precision-Paragon [P2] cuts energy and maintenance costs in stairwells, while improving safety. Today, the energy-efficient lighting manufacturer announced the release of the RLL Stairwell LED Radius Wrap.
"Many people underestimate the operating expense of stairwell lighting in commercial and industrial buildings," said Russell Price, [P2]'s director of engineering. "An average 50 story high-rise could house 600 individual stairwell fixtures, with an average annual energy cost of $75 to $100 per fixture."
The energy-efficient RLL Stairwell LED delivers efficacies of more than 100 lumens per watt. The fixture also offers additional energy savings with its integrated occupancy sensor. When stairwells are empty, RLL fixtures will dim their light output by 50%, cutting their energy consumption in half while still providing a base level of illumination as required by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes for stairwell illumination.
"With the fixture's efficient LED technology and occupancy sensor, the RLL can deliver significant energy savings," said Price. "In many installations, building owners who replace existing stairwell fixtures with RLLs can cut the energy costs for stairwell lighting by 70% or more."
While LED based fixtures have historically had higher initial costs than T8 fluorescent fixtures, that gap has nearly closed. The RLL’s added energy savings provide investment-grade paybacks. The RLL also provides a long lifespan that delivers substantial maintenance savings.
The RLL is both DesignLights Consortium® (DLC) and Lighting Facts® listed, and is eligible for energy-efficiency rebates in many parts of the country.
Building owners considering the RLL should take note of the increased safety offered by appropriate stairwell lighting. A 1999 study performed by the Pacific Institute of Research and Evaluation found that stair-related accidents cause an estimated $50-billion in damages every year in the United States.
