High Efficiency White LED Driver Integrates Schottky Diode
MILPITAS, CA - June 13, 2003 - Linear Technology Corporation announces the LT3465, a switching high efficiency, constant current white LED driver packaged in a ThinSOT(TM) (1mm tall SOT-23). The LT3465 is the first LED driver to feature an integrated Schottky diode on-chip, eliminating both the added cost and space of an external diode. The device is designed to drive up to six white LEDs from a single Li-Ion cell at efficiencies up to 81%.
The LT3465 switches at 1.2MHz, allowing the use of tiny inductors and capacitors. The constant frequency PWM operation results in low input and output noise. The combination of the LT3465's high efficiency, low noise and extremely small total solution footprint makes it ideal for handheld applications, requiring up to six white LEDs.
The LT3465 acts as a constant current source driving series connected LEDs. It delivers the same current to each white LED regardless of variations in the LED's forward voltage drop, which varies with temperature, ensuring uniform LED brightness. Additional features include output voltage limiting when LEDs are disconnected, plus one-pin dimming control and internal soft-start.
