LED Charge Pump delivers 400 mA output current.

Press Release Summary:

Operating within 2.7-5.5 V input range at 2.4 MHz switching frequency, SP6686 features current regulated buck/boost charge pump topology and 2 independently adjustable, bit selectable output current levels. It requires 3 external capacitors and automatically transitions from linear buck mode to 2x boost mode based on battery input voltage. Offered in 10-pin 3 x 3 mm DFN package, IC is targeted for use in camera flash applications in cell phones.

Sipex Expands LED Camera Flash Driver Family with 400mA Charge Pump that Offers Industry's Smallest Solution

(Milpitas, CA - April 6, 2005) - Sipex Corporation (NASDAQ: SIPX), a leading supplier of high performance, analog integrated circuits (ICs), further expands its family of LED drivers with the SP6686, a current regulated buck/boost charge pump delivering 400mA. Providing two independently adjustable and selectable output current levels for flash and torch modes, the SP6686 is an ideal solution for camera flash applications in cell phones.

Operating at an industry leading 2.4 MHz switching frequency, the SP6686 requires only three tiny external capacitors (0.47µF, 1µF, and 2.2µF), reducing the overall solution's footprint to new levels.

The SP6686 delivers up to 94% efficiency thanks to a proprietary feature that enables the IC to automatically transition from the linear buck mode to the 2x boost mode based on the battery input voltage. This also ensures the current does not depend on the LED forward voltage. An extremely low output equivalent resistance and reference voltage allows for the highest white LED flash brightness and an ultra low dropout voltage. The SP6686 also features a very low shutdown current, an automatic soft-start mode to limit inrush current, as well as over current, over voltage and thermal-shutdown control.

"The new SP6686 and the recently announced SP6685 are breakthrough products for high end and mainstream cell phone camera flash applications, offering high efficiency, the industry's smallest solution size and reduced external component cost," said Kevin Plouse, senior vice president of marketing and business development.
