Leading New England Custom Cable Manufacturer Using New TPE Alloy from S&E Specialty Polymers for Challenging Wind Turbine Applications

Compound is designed for toughness and operation in extreme climates

Lunenburg, MA . . . A new material blend from S&E Specialty Polymers featuring extreme toughness and resistance to severe environmental conditions is being used by a leading custom cable manufacturer in New England for wire jacketing for wind turbine applications around the world.

The blend, designated Tufflex 2200 series, is a chlorinated thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) compound that is flame retardant, UV resistant, oil resistant, and extremely temperature resistant. Key properties include:

Property Value Test Method

Cold resistance (brittle point) -53°C ASTM D746
Heat resistance (oven) +121°C 7 days in oven continous heat
Heat resistance (oil) +75°C 6dayASTM
Tensile retention 113% UL 1581
Elongation retention 84% UL 1581

Tufflex 2200 series meets the requirements for (UL) Type WTTC and CSA Type CIC cable products and is suitable for installation in the tower and nacelle of Wind Turbines, where it is exposed to extreme conditions that include cold, heat, and vibration. The finished electrical cables are used for control and service power for the Wind Turbines. They are critical components for the operation and maintenance of the tower and nacelle. The material's strength, flexibility and cold/hot weather properties are what make it successful in these applications.

S&E first developed compounds for wind turbine producers in 2005, according to Ilia Charlat, S&E's Vice President of Engineering. "The specifications have evolved and become much more stringent since then as the use of wind turbines has expanded significantly around the world," he said. "Our material is extremely robust and is the benchmark for these types of applications."

Tufflex 2200 series, which has recently been NCSA approved, is a chlorinated TPE alloy combining the properties of chemical and oil resistance of halogenated polymers with the toughness and low temperature properties of thermoplastic rubber (TPR) materials.
