Lead Paint Test Kit provides fast results.

Press Release Summary:

Using ½ in. circular paint sample, Lead Paint Check startup kit indicates lead concentration. Sample, cut up in smaller pieces and homogenized in ACID-1 acid solution, is diluted with water and then added to built-in photocell of eXact® LEADQuick(TM) Photometer. Once sample is zeroed, 2 drops of Pb-2 Buffer are added, and eXact Strip Pb-3 is dipped in sample for 20 sec. After 1 min, photometer measures optical density as absorbance number, which indicates lead concentration in sample.

Lead Paint Check Startup Kit

Lead-based paint is a major source of lead poisoning for children and can have an effect on adults. In children, lead poisoning can cause irreversible brain damage and can impair mental functioning. In adults, it can cause irritability, poor coordination, and nerve damage. According to the Centers for Disease Control, lead poisoning in children is the currently number one environmental health risk facing children. In the United States, more than three million children age six and younger has toxic levels of lead in their bodies.

In the early 20th century, lead was used as a pigment in oil based paint. It is estimated in the United States that 19 million homes have lead-based paint hazards, with 4 million young children under age the age of six living in them. Testing for lead in paint is vitally important. If proper precautions are not taken, remodeling or renovating an older home can generate a very large amount of dust. Even small jobs done during routine maintenance -- like painting -- can generate lead dust. The EPA recently issued a rule requiring the use of lead-safe practices called the Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting rule. Anycontractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 must follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination.

Industrial Test Systems, Inc. is proud to announce a new kit for testing lead concentrations in paint, the Lead Paint Check startup kit. Thekit uses a easy procedure utilizing patented technology. A ½ inch circle paint sample is collected and the sample is cut up in smaller piecesand homogenized in ACID-1 acid solution. Lead in the Homogenized Paint (HP) sample is efficiently solubilized as Pb+2 by the acid. The HP sample is then diluted 1/500 (100 µl per 50 ml of water).

The procedure for lead measurement in the diluted sample uses 4mls, which are added to the built-in photocell of the eXact® LEADQuick(TM) Photometer. The sample is zeroed, two drops of Pb-2 Buffer are added to make the solution mildly alkali (pH 9-10), and an eXact® Strip Pb-3 is then dipped in the sample for 20 seconds with gentle motion. The PB-3 strip simultaneously adds a porphyrin, colorimetric indicator and mixes the solution. After one minute, in which time the porphyrin and Pb+2 forms a colorimetric complex, the eXact® LEADQuick(TM) Photometermeasures the optical density (color) as an absorbance number (abs). The "abs" value will be dependent on the amount of lead that is present: the higher the "abs" value, the higher the lead concentration in the sample. The test kit determines when lead levels are safe (below 1.0 mg/cm2) The test also identifies semi-quantitatively if the lead concentrations in the paint is 1, 1.5, 2, or 3 (and above) mg/cm2.

The Lead Paint Check startup kit contains the waterproof eXact® LEADQuick(TM) photometer and enough reagents for 100 tests. Sample collection and preparation components include an Omni Homogenizer kit with stand, 15ml and 50ml conical tubes with rack, a 500ml wash bottle, ½" and ¼" cork bores with a sharpener and cork bore core remover, a 100µl pipette with pipette tips, scissors, forceps, a funnel system and small brush, a scalpel with blades, masking tape, a video CD and a LeadPaintCheck standard.

The price of the LeadPaintCheck Startup Kit is priced at $1999.99. The reagent replacement set is $99.99 for 50 tests. After the initial startup investment the cost per paint test is $2. Estimated time to run the test, which includes the sampling, homogenizing, diluting, and testing time is under 15 minutes per each paint.
