Original Press Release:

New LDO for DDR Bus Termination Handles 3.1A Peak Current, Expanding Fairchild's Solutions for DDR Memory Applications

San Jose, Calif.- October 23, 2002- Fairchild Semiconductor International (NYSE: FCS) has expanded its portfolio of DDR (double data rate) memory system power solutions with the introduction of the FAN1655, a new low-cost LDO (low drop-out) regulator that can sink and source 3.1A peak current. The FAN1655's voltage regulation is guaranteed to meet the JEDEC specification for DDR memory interface levels for PCs, graphics cards, embedded computing systems, computer peripheral data buffers and other DDR memory or bus termination applications. This LDO regulator features Kelvin sensing, ensuring regulation of VTT to VDDQ/2 ±40mV for achieving the highest possible data bus bandwidth. Additionally, a buffered VREF output capable of ±5mA is provided for SSTL-2 interface devices.

Other important features of the FAN1655 include power-conserving shutdown control and protection of the VTT output against overload and short circuit conditions by on-chip thermal limiting. The FAN1655 is fully specified from 0ºC to +125ºC temperature range and is guaranteed to be functional from a -40ºC to +125ºC range. In addition to standard low-cost 14-lead SOIC packaging, the FAN1655 is available in a power-enhanced 16-lead, exposed-pad TSSOP package capable of delivering 3A continuous current. The part is supplied in either tube or tape-and-reel packing.

The FAN1655 is the newest member of the Fairchild family of products for DDR memory, which offers the industry's widest choice of power and interface solutions created specifically for this fast-growing memory technology. Other products of note include Fairchild's FAN5236, a complete PWM solution for DDR power offering VDDQ, VTT and VREF outputs at over 90% efficiency, and the FAN6555, a compact PWM regulator with minimum parts-count that outputs VTT at up to +/- 3A peak. Fairchild is also a leading supplier of DDR module buffer devices including the SSTV16857 and SSTV16859.
