MagnaChip Launches Mass Production of a Series of LCD Drivers for Mobile Phones

SEOUL, South Korea, Dec. 4 -- MagnaChip Semiconductor Ltd., a leading global designer, developer and manufacturer of image sensor solutions, mixed-signal and digital multimedia semiconductors, today, announced the mass production of a series of its high resolution LCD driver chips for handset and mobile phone applications.

MagnaChip's QCIF+ LCD driver chips (product name: MC2TA7402) were developed and completed early this year. The MC2TA7402 product is used for mobile phones, applies 0.18um/0.15um process technology and high voltage processes to reduce chip size by at least 40% vs. MagaChip's existing products. The MC2TA7402 product also supports system and video interface as well as low voltage architecture.

Moreover, MagnaChip is in the final stages of developing a TFT LCD one- chip driver that applies amorphous Silicon (a-Si) (product name: MC2TA7501) and is scheduled to begin mass production next month.

The MC2TA7501 product offers QVGA resolution and is a third generation one-chip solution with an estimated 30% reduction in size compared to the company's existing products. The driver chip solution comes with an EEPROM (MTP) loaded, supporting both Vertical Alignment and in-plain-switching (IPS) panels, and two technologies supporting a wide viewing angle. The solution is cost competitive as it is manufactured in the company's fab.

Davis Mok, Vice President of Marketing in MagnaChip's Display Solutions Division, commented, "Our most recent a-Si TFT panel drivers are not only the most universal Twisted Nematic (TN) types, but also provide one of the best image qualities among high-end a-Si TFT panels supporting a wide viewing angle. On other fronts, MagnaChip Semiconductor also finished the development of a wide range of driver chips ranging from QQVGA to QCIF+ and QVGA solutions with mass production underway already for a number of these products."
