High Accuracy Single Point Sensor From LMI Selcom Available For Medium-To-Long Range Measurements



DETROIT, Michigan -- A single point laser sensor for numerous medium-to-long range measurement applications is now available from LMI Selcom.

The CCD-based SPR-02 is ideal for monitoring wind-up of materials, distance, thickness or material deformation, positioning and profiling applications. Typical applications include measuring the wind-up of fiber on a spool, proper alignment of a wheel into a milling machine, and measuring the thickness of ceramic fiber.

The sensor uses optical triangulation measurement principles to deliver a resolution as fine as 0.001 in. (25 micrometers) at up to 1,800 measurement points per second.

Available in a medium range Class IIIa and a long range Class IIIb version, the SPR-02 has a measuring range varying from 32 in. to 168 in. (813 mm to 4,267 mm) and an offset distance from 6 in. to 16 in. (152 mm to 406 mm). Measurement sample rate is 1.8KHz.

The Class IIIa sensor has the same safety requirements as the normally eye safe Class II sensor, while the Class IIIb sensor adds a longer measurement range with exceptional resolution and accuracy.

The SPR-02's internal feedback loop automatically compensates for differences in detected light intensity due to the target's color and texture by varying power to the laser diode. Its digital design resists changes to ambient temperature and lighting and it is software programmable which allows the user to change certain parameters such as: min/max measurement range, output, offset, out-of-range indication and filtering/buffering. The SPR-02 has a high speed sample rate of 18kHz.

"Compared to less expensive ultrasonic sensors normally used for many of these applications, the SPR-02 provides the user with a longer life, less maintenance and downtime and more dependable service," noted David Allen, LMI Selcom Business Manager. "Ultrasonic sensors normally provide a non-linear output because of their larger spot size. Thus, false signals and invalid measurement points are normally common."

SPR-02 Technical Details

The RS-485 and RS-232 interface allows easy interface and analog or digital output connection with PC's and PLC's. Set-up software, provided by LMI Selcom, allows the user to change certain parameters to meet process needs such as min/max range, output, offset, out-of-range indication or filtering/buffering, all with a high speed scan rate of 1800Hz.

After configuration, all parameters are stored in a flash EPROM, allowing the SPR-02 to operate as a stand-alone sensor. Software is also available on a 3.5-in. disk.

The SPR-02 sensor operates in temperatures from 32°F to 122°F (0°C to 50°C). Power is provided by a 15-30 VDC power source. Signal Processing electronics, which includes a 16-bit micro-controller, provides for data averaging and filtering, easy integration of application software and transfer of data to the control system. Dimensions of sensors are 8.5 x 6.0 x 2.13 in. (216 x 152 x 54 mm) and the weight is 4.0 lbs. (1816 grams).
