Laser Machine welds chute channels in instrument panels.

Press Release Summary:

Suitable for welding plastic materials in automotive applications, JENOPTIK-VOTAN® W integrates switchable laser line which is moved along welding area via linear unit, enabling contactless processing of components with dimensions exceeding normal scan field of scanning system. Strength of welded joint achieves values of up to 90% of basic strength of material. With machine, welding of airbag chute channels in instrument panels and large car body parts is possible.

Original Press Release:

Jenoptik Shows its Latest Development for Laser Welding of Chute Channels at IZB 2012.

Jenoptik’s Lasers Material Processing division demonstrate their latest breakthroughs in the field of laser welding of chute channels at IZB, the international suppliers fair 2012 in Wolfsburg, Germany from October 10 to 12, 2012 in the hall 7, booth 205.

Modern laser technology keeps opening up new fields of application in material processing. When it comes to cutting, welding and perforating plastic materials, laser technology constitutes an established and recognized method - particularly in the automotive and supply industries. The increasing amount of components in the vehicle interior and rising safety demands consistently confront automotive manufacturers with new challenges. New design and production possibilities for vehicle interiors based on these requirements can be realized using laser technology made by Jenoptik. The latest Jenoptik development is the laser machine JENOPTIK-VOTAN® W for welding chute channels in the instrument panel - an alternative process for highest esthetic demands and maximum strength.

The most common method for welding plastic materials is laser transmission welding.

With the help of innovative diode lasers of its own value creation potential, Jenoptik´s Laser Processing Systems business unit has managed to further develop this laser welding process in an economically expedient manner by integrating a switchable laser line for large components. Applying this new process, previous limitations in the processing of larger components can be minimized. The laser line can be adapted to nearly every component size. One of the greatest benefits of this technology lies in the strength of the welded joint achieving values of up to 90 % of the basic strength of the material. The switchable laser line is moved along the welding area via a linear unit. In this way, contactless processing of components with dimensions exceeding the normal scan field of a scanning system, e.g. welding of airbag chute channels in instrument panels or of large car body parts, is made possible. Moreover, the system equipment excellently supports the assembly of safety-relevant components through nearly 100 % process control.

Find out more about the JENOPTIK-VOTAN® W laser machine at the IZB in Wolfsburg, hall 7, stand 205, on October 10 through 12.
