Coherent's Newest 100W CO2 Laser Extends Trap Duration in All-Optical Atom Trapping Applications

Santa Clara, Calif., February 7, 2003 - Coherent, Inc., (Nasdaq:COHR) introduces the GEM Select 100-a 100W, 10.6 µm, RF-excited, waveguide CO2 laser designed specifically for scientific applications such as all-optical atom trapping. When coupled with the recommended power supply, the GEM Select 100 supports atom-trapping lifetimes of greater than 10,000 seconds.

"We designed the GEM Select 100 to meet the scientific community's need for a highly reliable, operator-friendly, 100-watt laser for use in a number of applications, including all-optical atom trapping," said Eric Mueller, manager of CO2 engineering and specialty products for Coherent. "The GEM Select 100 is especially appropriate for the trapping application since the laser's brick-like construction provides for very low-noise spectral density, which is critical to long trap lifetimes."

The conduction-cooled waveguide laser features a TEM00 spatial mode and provides more than 100W of output power at 10.6 µm. Adapted from a field-proven Coherent commercial laser design, the GEM Select 100 is unique among scientific CO2 lasers for its rugged, all-metal sealed package. For easy integration into any laboratory setting, it measures just 31.125 x 7.75 x 6.75 inches and weighs just 52 lbs.

The clean layout of the laser's rear panel also offers immediate access to the interlock control, the key-operated on-off switch and the status indicators. The GEM Select 100 includes options such as PZT cavity tuning, variable output power, external modulation input and an internal pointer. This GEM technology has demonstrated a lifetime in excess of 40,000 hours.
