Laser Event Recorder helps protect workers' eyes.

Press Release Summary:

Battery-powered unit measures, characterizes, and documents laser exposures in support of dosimetry requirements for protection of personnel working with or who could potentially be exposed to laser illumination. It operates autonomously for up to 6 hr against continuous and pulsed laser sources in visible and NIR spectrum. While detecting laser energy, recorder extracts pertinent exposure information and captures JPEG image of scene containing laser.

OPTRA, Inc. Announces Availability of Laser Event Recorder

Topsfield, MA (May, 2006) - The Laser Event Recorder, developed by OPTRA, Inc. in partnership with the Naval Air Systems Command, is now available in a commercial version. The device measures, characterizes, and documents laser exposures in support of dosimetry requirements for the protection of personnel working with or who could potentially be exposed to laser illumination.

The laser event recorder is battery powered and operates autonomously for up to six hours against both continuous and pulsed laser sources in the visible and near infrared portion of the spectrum. The recorder detects laser energy, extracts pertinent exposure information such as irradiance level, wavelength, pulse duration, pulse repetition frequency, time and location of exposure, and captures an image (JPEG) of the scene containing the laser. Irradiance levels are compared to the appropriate ANSI standard and if the exposure level poses a hazard to eye safety a visible warning is issued to the operator and the exposure and scene information is stored for later retrieval and analysis.

The recorder weighs 700 grams and is 5 x 8 x 13 cm in size. As a result of the recorder's size, weight, and autonomy it is ideally suited to demanding applications with virtually no set up required. Performance specifications are available upon request.
