Laser Design and GKS Inspection Services Expand 3D Laser Scanning Capacity Dramatically with Wenzel Systems

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (November 20, 2007) - Laser Design, Inc., the leading supplier of 3D laser scanners for more than 20 years, and GKS Inspection Services, its in-house service bureau division offering dimensional inspection, 3D laser scanning, and terrestrial scanning services for over 25 years, have installed Wenzel CMM systems outfitted with Laser Design's high-speed ultra-accurate SLP laser probes in their Minneapolis, Detroit, Seattle, China, and Netherlands offices. The addition of these new systems dramatically expands the company's 3D laser scanning capacity worldwide and enables them to provide demonstrations to customers in multiple locations.

The LDI-Wenzel WS-2030 systems are fitted with completely interchangeable Laser Design laser probes so they can quickly and easily perform high-speed 3D laser scanning, and also convert back to traditional CMM touch probe operation. 3D laser scanning is especially well suited for reverse engineering and inspection applications of complex and freeform shaped parts in many industries including electronics, aerospace, automotive, and many more.

Laser Design is known as the standard of excellence for ultra-precise, 3D laser scanning systems and services, supplying laser scanning solutions since 1987. The company has more experience in this specialized field than any other supplier. Wenzel America President Keith Mills commented, "We are extremely pleased to partner with Laser Design, a pioneer in 3D laser scanning with a well proven solution. The market for laser scanning systems continues to increase and Wenzel is prepared to meet the demand for WS-Series systems with manufacturing facilities on three continents and a global support network."

LDI-Wenzel WS-Series systems can be supplied as a dedicated laser scanner for inspection or reverse engineering or be loaded with optional OpenDMIS software for additional use as a traditional touch probe measurement CMM. Laser Design's Surveyor Scan Control (SSC) Software for point-cloud acquisition integrates with the Wenzel motion controller using an I++ interface. The addition of a fourth axis to the Wenzel controller powers Laser Design's proprietary rotary scanning solution which greatly automates the scanning process for small parts. The systems also support the Renishaw PH10 motorized indexing head for automated laser scanning of larger parts.

"Combining the Laser Design 3D laser scanner with Wenzel CMMs has created a modern high-powered solution for dimensional inspection, reverse engineering, and 3D laser scanning," said C. Martin Schuster, President of Laser Design. "With the Wenzel-based scanning systems in our metrology labs and showrooms around the world, we now have much more laser scanning capacity closer to many more clients." Customers in international locations can try their applications hands-on with the availability of the new demo systems. For those customers who are not near a Laser Design / GKS service center, they can view web demos of the system's capabilities using their own parts. "Our goal is to provide the best 3D laser scanning products and services worldwide," continued Schuster, "and the new cutting-edge Wenzel systems will help us accomplish our aim."

Laser Design, Inc. has been the leading supplier of ultra-precise, 3D laser scanning systems and services for over 20 years. Used for capturing the 3D shape of objects with complex geometries and free-form surfaces, Laser Design's Surveyor line of automated and portable scanning systems are ideal for 3D scanning applications involving inspection and reverse engineering of complex shaped plastic and metal parts. The company's patented laser line-probe technology dramatically reduces scanning time by collecting data substantially faster and more accurately than conventional metrology technologies. Laser Design integrates Geomagic software with its laser scanners to provide complete solutions for reverse engineering and inspection applications.

Headquartered in Minneapolis, the company also has Regional Technical Services and Support Centers in Seattle and Detroit, and distributors throughout Europe and Asia. Laser Design also operates GKS Inspection Services (www.GKS.com), an in-house service bureau division offering complete 3D scanning, reverse engineering, and dimensional inspection services worldwide for over 25 years.
