Organics diversion programmes recycle organic waste to improve agricultural soil quality

Cardia Bioplastics, a subsidiary of SECOS Group Limited (ASX: SES), is pleased to announce that it has secured ongoing contracts to supply ten Australian Councils kitchen tidy bins and Compostable bags for their large scale organic waste diversion and recycling programmes.

With its expertise in organic waste management products, Cardia is uniquely positioned to supply Councils in Australia and around the globe with Certified Compostable products that have been tested and proven to meet composting requirements. Since the commencement of the programmes the ten Councils have supplied households with more than 19 million Cardia Compostable bags.

Having closely cooperated with Councils, waste management companies and industrial composters, Cardia has optimised its compostable kitchen tidy bags and kitchen tidy bins, from household use to waste collection and composting. Cardia's kitchen tidy bins effectively capture and handle kitchen food scraps. Together with Cardia compostable bags the kitchen tidy enables aeration of food waste, encouraging an aerobic environment that minimises any unpleasant odours. With the use of a kitchen tidy, households can easily capture kitchen organic scraps, which when placed in the green waste bins are recycled in composting facilities to create high quality fertilisers. Cardia's compostable garden bags can be used for capturing organic garden waste, such as leaves, weeds and grass clippings.

Food and garden waste are the main sources of organic waste in landfills. At this stage, most households are placing organic material such as food scraps and garden waste, into their residual waste bin. According to programmes such as Halve Waste and City to Soil, the average household garbage is made up of 20% food waste and 9% garden waste  which adds up to a significant amount of material going into landfill that could be composted and used by local growers to improve soil fertility. By recycling organic material we have the ability to reduce carbon emissions and improve soil quality by injecting carbon and other nutrients back into the soil which also assists in improving the soils water penetration.

Indigo Shire Councillor and former Keep Australia Beautiful Chairman, Don Chambers understands the importance of bringing nutrients back into Australian soil to improve agricultural soil quality. Mr Chambers stated, "Australians have long recognised that when recycled, what is generally termed "waste" is a valuable resource. Recycling reduces carbon emissions and dependency on new materials.' Mr Chambers continues, "Organic material such as food scraps, leaves and grass clippings when recycled creates excellent soil fertilisers that improve the quality of Australian soil. Australian agricultural soil has been depleted through years of farming and will benefit from an injection of quality organic fertilisers. Mr Chambers continues, "With new composting facilities Australian Councils are starting to close the loop through effectively transforming organic household waste into high quality soil fertilisers."

Cardia Bioplastics CEO, Dr Frank Glatz stated, "We are seeing rapid growth in the uptake of our Cardia Compostable organic waste recycling products, amongst Councils within Australia and throughout the world. As a business, we invest in significant research and testing to ensure that our products meet the unique requirements of households, commercial users and composting facilities for every Council we supply."

Dr Glatz continues, "We are excited to be a part of a solution that closes the loop. As a company involved in global waste recycling management we understand the benefits of diverting organic waste from landfills to create quality organic fertilisers. Landfills are filling up and landfill prices are rising in line with this. Councils that are participating in organic waste recycling programmes are demonstrating how to create wealth from waste."

Diverting organic waste from landfills in Australia represents an immense opportunity. Australian landfills are filling up and organic material can be recycled to create quality compost. Organic recycling programmes make both good environmental and business sense.  The selection of Cardia Compostable waste management products by Australian Councils for their organic waste recycling programmes, further validates that Cardia Compostable and Biohybrid™ products are the quality sustainable choice.

With the launch of Cardia's Compostable retail range and the new Cardia Bioproducts website, households and businesses can now purchase compostable bin liners and bags for all their waste management needs.
