Lancope's StealthWatch® Leverages NetFlow to Protect Service Provider Networks

Recent technology partnership with Cisco further strengthens Lancope's service provider offerings

ATLANTA - Cisco Live and Gartner Security & Risk Management Summit - Lancope, Inc., a leader in flow-based security and network performance monitoring, announces a comprehensive solution for protecting and ensuring high performance levels for service provider infrastructure. By leveraging NetFlow, IPFIX and other types of flow data, Lancope's StealthWatch® System provides a cost-effective, holistic view of everything happening across a network, and can scale to millions of flows per second (fps) to secure even the most massive service provider environments. Lancope is currently demonstrating the StealthWatch System at Cisco Live Booth #944 in San Diego, Calif., as well as at the Gartner Security & Risk Management Summit in Washington, D.C.

"The service provider industry must be vigilant in protecting its networks from online attackers due to the key role it plays in critical infrastructure and the number of businesses and individuals that depend upon it every day," said Chris Smithee, strategic solutions architect for Lancope. "In recent years, large-scale service providers have increasingly been suffering from DDoS attacks that impact their customers' networks. In such a competitive marketplace, providers cannot afford to have their networks compromised and reputation tarnished by stealthy intruders."

By utilizing sophisticated behavioral analysis versus signature updates, StealthWatch can seamlessly detect suspicious network behaviors that signify a DDoS or other type of attack, enabling service providers to quickly mitigate the issue before it impacts customer networks. The system is scalable to protect even the largest, most dynamic networks with the ability to monitor up to 120,000 fps per collector.

Unlike conventional security solutions that cover only specific segments of the network or detect limited types of attacks, StealthWatch can detect virtually any risk - APTs, worms, viruses, botnets, data leakage, internal policy violations, etc. - across both physical and virtual environments. Advanced capabilities including application awareness and automatic threat prioritization and mitigation further enhance troubleshooting and reduce the time from problem onset to resolution.

Lancope has also recently forged an enhanced technology partnership with Cisco to offer the Cyber Threat Defense Solution. Combining the power of StealthWatch with advanced network and security technologies from Cisco, the solution is designed to quickly detect dangerous, elusive threats lurking inside enterprise networks. Early threat detection enables organizations to uncover potential network risks before they wreak havoc on internal, partner and customer environments.

"Due to the massive size and open nature of service provider networks, conventional defenses such as firewalls and network probes do not offer feasible protection for this market," added Smithee. "As service provider bandwidth needs continue to grow, the only viable solution for obtaining comprehensive visibility across these networks is a next-generation, flow-based monitoring solution like StealthWatch."

Large organizations around the globe, including Cisco and many service providers, rely on StealthWatch to protect their networks. "Our network sustains more than a million packets per second in traffic," said Henrik Strom, head of IT security for Telenor Norway. "During our extensive evaluation of security monitoring products, StealthWatch was found to be the only solution that can scale to our needs in terms of network traffic and administration. StealthWatch enables us to proactively identify issues in our data centers that would otherwise have required tremendous effort to uncover."

Unlike some monitoring solutions that only provide summarized traffic reports, StealthWatch enables service providers to drill into network traffic issues down to the exact customers and applications responsible to answer questions such as:

- Which networks are consuming the most bandwidth?

- Are other customers impacted by abusive network usage?

- Are any customers suffering from DDoS attacks?

- Is malware or other malicious traffic originating from our network?

In the end, if service providers fail to protect their customers and deliver a positive user experience, their business will suffer as customers switch to other providers. StealthWatch delivers the situational awareness and actionable intelligence needed for service providers to remain a step ahead of online attackers and industry competitors.
