Pelikan Technologies Unveils First Fully Automated, Electronically Controlled, Self-Contained Lancing System for People with Diabetes

New Orleans, LA - June 13, 2003 - Pelikan Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of technology for hand-held diagnostics, announced today the public debut of the Pelikan Sun(TM) lancing device, the company's lead product. The Pelikan Sun(TM) lancing device, which received United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance in April 2003, is being unveiled to physicians and other industry representatives this weekend at the 63rd American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions in New Orleans, LA. The company will provide a first-hand look at the Pelikan Sun lancing device to ADA conference attendees at the Pelikan booth (# 257) in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center from June 14-16. Pelikan expects the product to be available commercially in the U.S. in early 2004.

"The Pelikan Sun lancing device is the first product to emerge from our proprietary technology platform, making this introduction a significant milestone for Pelikan," said Pelikan's President and CEO, Dirk Boecker, M.D., Ph.D. "This is a truly innovative product that promises to dramatically improve the lancing process for individuals with diabetes. As such, we are eager to share this device with the diabetes community."

The Pelikan Sun lancing device is the first fully automated, electronically controlled, self-contained lancing system. Lancing, an often painful act of piercing the skin in order to obtain a sample of blood for glucose measurement, is required multiple times each day for millions of people with diabetes. Due
to its automated features and sophisticated electronic controls, the Pelikan Sun lancing device provides superior convenience and significantly reduced pain to people with diabetes, as compared to currently-marketed lancing devices.

Based on Pelikan's "one-step, one-button" approach, the Pelikan Sun lancing device is the first system that allows a patient to execute the entire lancing process at the touch of a button. Visitors to Pelikan's booth at the ADA conference will be able to discuss the numerous advantages offered by the Pelikan Sun lancing device over the cumbersome and painful lancing systems currently available to people with diabetes. These advantages include the following:
1. Significant Reduction in Pain - The Pelikan Sun lancing device utilizes Smart Lancing(TM) technology, which allows for smooth and highly controlled lancing at the lowest useful penetration depth. This precise control eliminates much of the pain associated with other available lancing systems, thus improving the acceptance by the user of the lancing process. The device's innovative lancing technique also significantly improves the wound healing process.
2. Superior Safety & Convenience - A self-contained lancet disk eliminates the need to handle sharps, whether the sharp lancets are new or contaminated. The disk, which contains 50 sterile lancets, is simply replaced after 50 uses. Individuals with diabetes, most importantly children, will not have to see or handle a lancet ever again.
3. Superior Efficiency & Reliability - In addition to its unique "one-step, one-button" feature, the Pelikan Sun lancing device eliminates the need for repetitive lancing due to insufficient blood acquisition, and saves time when compared to devices currently on the market. In laboratory tests, the Pelikan Sun lancing device has demonstrated a nearly 100% success rate in securing a sufficient amount of blood for testing. This figure significantly surpasses the industry average of approximately 80% success, which often requires an additional step of "milking" the spot that has been lanced to obtain a successful sample.

The Pelikan Sun lancing device, the first product in Pelikan's pipeline of integrated, "one-step, one-button" devices for glucose monitoring, incorporates the platform design that will serve as the foundation for Pelikan's next generation blood glucose monitoring products. The company's second-generation product is a one-step, fully integrated blood glucose sampling and measurement solution. This product combines the sample acquisition benefits of the Pelikan Sun lancing device with superior measurement technology in one convenient device that will significantly reduce pain, eliminate daily medical waste, and provide superior monitoring reliability. Pelikan intends to launch this all-in-one device in 2005.

About Blood Glucose Monitoring
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends that people with diabetes test their blood glucose at least four times per day. Yet, on average, individuals with diabetes who use insulin only perform l.8 tests each day, and the figures for non-insulin-using individuals are significantly lower.

Diabetes experts suggest that regular monitoring of blood glucose levels leads to better disease control and better long-term disease management. Experts maintain that people with diabetes who are aware of their changing glucose levels can adjust their treatment programs accordingly and prevent the high blood glucose concentrations that contribute to both short and long-term medical problems.

About Pelikan Technologies
Pelikan Technologies combines novel and proprietary blood sampling and measurement techniqus with state-of-the-art miniaturization and automation technologies to develop superior hand-held diagnostic and monitoring devices with applications to numerous medical conditions. Pelikan's product line will significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with diabetes by providing the first, fully integrated blood sampling and glucose measurement systems. Pelikan's products will streamline blood glucose monitoring from a cumbersome, painful, multi-step process to an automated, one-step process that dramatically improves ease-of-use and significantly reduces the pain associated with sample collection and measurement.
