Foundry Networks Announces New Secure LAN Switches for Enterprise-Wide Security

The SecureIronLS Family of Secure LAN Switches Provides Protection Against Internal Threats With Device, User and Usage Access Control, and Deep Application Inspection

SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 29 -- Foundry Networks(R), Inc. (NASDAQ:FDRY), a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end switching and routing, today announced new SecureIronLS(TM) secure LAN switches, the industry's only LAN switches with embedded Layer 2 through 7 security for enterprise-wide protection against internal threats. These switches are designed to be deployed as a security value-added alternative to traditional LAN switches in the distribution layer as an internal firewall, or at the edge as personal firewall with direct desktop and server connectivity. The secure LAN switches provide comprehensive admission, access and usage control for all traffic flowing to and from the edge of the network, and combine deep application level inspection to contain threats before they propagate throughout the LAN.

Foundry's SecureIronLS secure LAN switches are designed for the new enterprise networks where pervasive mobility, wireless and convergence have rendered traditional perimeter-only security models meaningless. The SecureIronLS family features switches with a choice of port configurations, including high density 10/100 Mbps and Gigabit over Copper (GoC) options with fiber Gigabit and 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10-GbE) uplinks. The family now includes compact Two-Rack Unit (2RU) switches for space constrained wiring closets and small-scale server farms. New high-performance models feature Foundry's new-generation security processor technology that delivers multiple gigabits per second throughput performance for inside LAN security applications.

"Embedding application intelligence into the LAN infrastructure for enhanced security provides a high value proposition for enterprises," said Joel Conover, research director for Current Analysis. "Foundry's approach of integrating native security into the LAN switch architecture is not only unique but is also the technique next-generation security devices will adopt."

The SecureIronLS switches provide complete security throughout the life of network access by users, devices and flows with authentication, access control, and intrusion/anomaly detection and prevention. The switches authenticate device and user credentials prior to granting network admission and access, and use secure Web transactions to authenticate the user against enterprise user databases, including Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS), Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and Active Directory. SecureIronLS switches may optionally be equipped with a hardware SSL acceleration module to scale the performance of secure Web authentication to a large number of users. Network access is controlled with identity based access control policy enforcement to network and data center resources, and by means of deep application inspection of user traffic against known threat profiles.

"Our IP network is central to business operations, and downtime caused by malicious attacks is unacceptable," said Thomas Ting, senior systems engineer for Viejas Casino in San Diego, California. "We selected Foundry's secure LAN switches to deliver personalized protection to every server port. Security is a necessity, but has sizeable cost and performance impact. We found Foundry's solution to offer a good balance of security and performance at an affordable premium to traditional LAN switch cost."

"Organizations are rapidly adopting IP and Web technologies for all business-critical applications and communication services with mobility, wireless and VoIP edge networking solutions as the foundation at the edge," said Gopala Tumuluri, director of product management for Foundry Networks. "These new technologies and networking models are expanding the traditional perimeter to the internal LAN and forcing the need for application-intelligent security requirements inside the network. Foundry's SecureIronLS secure LAN switch family is designed to seamlessly integrate into the enterprise network to deliver comprehensive security from edge to core at an affordable premium to traditional LAN switch costs."

Key features of the SecureIronLS secure LAN switch products include:

-- Wire-speed network layer security
-- Multi-Gigabit denial-of-service (DoS) and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) protection
