QuickLabel's Vivo! Label Printer Now Prints 50% Faster

WEST WARWICK, RI -- September 15, 2008 -- QuickLabel Systems, a Product Group of Astro-Med, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALOT) today released a new, higher-speed version of its popular Vivo! short-run digital color label printer. The Vivo! now prints at a speed of 3 inches per second, a 50% increase in speed over the previous Vivo! model.

The Vivo! is an electrophotographic digital label printing system that prints photo-quality color labels on roll-fed label stock, allowing on-demand label printing with variable label content, including photos, graphics, and barcodes. The toner-based Vivo! prints labels on-demand, allowing manufacturers to quickly label their products according to sales orders.

"Now, new Vivo! owners will be able to print photo-quality custom labels faster than ever before. We've heard from the hundreds of end-user manufacturers who own Vivo!s that their production and packaging operations rely on having the right digital label at the right time - and the faster the better," said Eric Pizzuti, Worldwide Sales Director of QuickLabel Systems.

Describing the dramatic increase in label throughput made possible by the Vivo!'s increase in print speed, Pizzuti said, "The number of labels the Vivo! can print per hour varies with label size, but a company with color labels in the size 3" x 4" (76mm x 102mm) would be able to print 19,008 digital labels in an 8-hour shift day - and that's with variable label content."

"What makes the Vivo! such a powerful production tool is that it makes short-run label printing as affordable as it is fast - those 19,008 labels printed on-demand would cost no more than $0.06 - $0.12 each, depending on toner coverage," continued Pizzuti.

"Some Vivo! owners print labels constantly, some print labels only a few days a week. But the Vivo!'s faster print speed means that, whenever label printing takes place, on-demand label production will be able to keep pace with faster production lines. This is a great advantage for the production managers who rely on the Vivo! to print labels that will be applied by automatic label applicator systems," said Pizzuti.

According to the company, the increase in speed is the most significant new enhancement to QuickLabel's flagship Vivo! digital label printer. The Vivo! was also modified to simplify the label re-loading process and to optimize media handling through the print engine.

In August 2007, QuickLabel's parent company, Astro-Med, Inc, received a patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office on the mechanism it invented to allow the Vivo! to print on continuous rollstock adhesive labels.
