L-3 Communications Awarded over $40 Million Transportation Security Administration Order for Examiner Explosives Detection Systems

TSA orders upgraded systems for field use-

NEW YORK --L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) announced today that its Security and Detection Systems subsidiary will supply the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) with eXaminer 3DX(TM) explosives detection systems (EDS), as well as upgrades for existing eXaminer systems previously ordered by the agency. The order, valued at more than $40 million, contains software and hardware upgrades that will enable airports to bring existing eXaminer systems forward to the most current product release without requiring the purchase of new base systems.

L-3's TSA-certified eXaminer features revolutionary multi-slice computer tomography (CT) imaging technology that provides full 3-D imaging to quickly and accurately scan entire objects.

"In creating explosives detection equipment with flexible platforms that allow for expansion, and improvement, we have increased operational efficiency and cost effectiveness," said Thomas Ripp, President of L-3 Security and Detection Systems. "Our forward-thinking approach to threat detection has enabled the TSA to consistently operate eXaminer systems and effectively extend the utility of our explosives detection technology."

In addition to being L-3's most advanced TSA-certified explosives detection system of its kind, the eXaminer's landmark technology has been certified by some of the world's most security-minded countries.

The system's user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) technology and advanced image processing tools include edge enhancement, monochrome reverse and high-resolution detailing. Additionally, flexible networking technology supports a mix of different eXaminer scanners and configurations on the same network.

eXaminer's intelligent hardware upgrades are designed to increase efficiency and make integration with existing baggage handling equipment more convenient, including a one-meter-wide entrance tunnel, which senses bag size and automatically rotates bags for optimum presentation to the scanner; extra-long baggage capacity; and increased throughput rate up to 600 bags an hour when used as part of an integrated inline system.

With a broad range of systems and technology, and an installed base of more than 18,000 systems worldwide, L-3 Security and Detection Systems offers screening technologies for numerous security applications that include: (1) aviation systems for hold baggage explosives detection, oversized baggage, and checkpoint screening; (2) cargo and air freight screening; (3) port and border inspection; and (4) facility protection. L-3 Security and Detection Systems' customer base includes major airlines, airports, numerous government agencies around the world (including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Federal Protective Service, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Department of State, and U.S. Department of Agriculture), and international authorities throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
