Keeping the Data Center Clean: ATEN Launches Industry-First KVM Switches with Antimicrobial Nanocoating to Protect Products from Bacteria Surviving on Surfaces

Three Hideaway(TM) LCD KVM Switches to be First Units to Sport New Nanocoating

IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 10 / -- ATEN Technology, Inc., an innovator of high-quality KVM (keyboard/video/mouse) and remote connectivity products to centrally manage servers, network devices and IT infrastructure, today unveiled the first LCD KVM switches to feature product-protected antimicrobial nanocoating.

The average desk harbors 400 times more bacteria than the average toilet seat, and some of the most germ-contaminated items include the keyboard and mouse, according to a study conducted by the University of Arizona. Despite this fact, network administrators rarely have time to clean their desktops which can lead to the spread of bacteria in the data center. As a result, the presence of microbes contributes to the spread of pneumonia, the flu, pink eye and strep throat, among other extremely contagious viruses.

"We have designed these groundbreaking and nanocoated enterprise KVM switches to serve the needs of network administrators who operate in 'clean room' environments such as hospitals, laboratories, manufacturing facilities and others," said Sampson Yang, CEO, ATEN Technology, Inc. "Beyond these specific environments, product protective antimicrobial nanocoating can benefit data centers and multi-user environments, as well as server rooms within libraries, schools or government facilities where protection is critical."

According to Yang, the special nanocoating uses two mechanisms to deactivate enzymes and proteins of bacteria from surviving on the surface of the product. The compound has been tested and proven effective against various bacteria surviving on the product's surface.

The National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), a federal R&D program established to coordinate the multi-agency efforts in nanoscale science, engineering, and technology, defines nanotechnology as the understanding and control of matter at dimensions of roughly 1 to 100 nanometers, where unique phenomena enable novel applications.

Available now, the following ATEN products will be the first KVM switches to offer the protective antimicrobial nanocoating:

o KL9108M/KL9116M Hideaway(TM) LCD Console Over the NET -- In addition to
nanocoating, these products are Hideaway LCD IP-based KVM control units
that allow both local and remote operators to monitor and access
multiple computers from multiple consoles. A single KL9108M / KL9116M
can control up to 8 / 16 computers and can be accessed from any
computer via a web browser. The KL9108M / KL9116M features
independently retractable 17" LCD monitor and keyboard with built-in
touchpad. To maximize space in your data center, the keyboard "hides
away" when not in use. These nanocoated models are priced at $3195.95
and $3699.95, respectively.

o KL1116L & KL1116M Hideaway(TM) LCD KVM Switch is a 16-port KVM unit
that allows access to multiple computers from a single 15" or 17" LCD
console. The model sports an innovative dual-rail design that allows
the console to slide back while the LCD panel remains in plain sight --
even with the server rack door closed -- to monitor and troubleshoot
servers. The KL1116 features the KH0116 KVM device built into this LCD.
The KL1116 nanocoated model is competitively priced at $2499.95 for
KL1116L and $2599.95 for KL1116M.

o KL3116M is a rackmount 17" LCD KVMP (Keyboard, Video, Mouse,
Peripheral) switch that features an extra local console port, USB
peripheral sharing technology, and an external mouse port. The KL3116,
part of the ALTUSEN line of enterprise-class KVM solutions from ATEN,
is a 16-port switch that can monitor up to 16 computers in a 1U-high
configuration. The unit also includes dual platform compatibility with
support for PS/2 and USB. The KL3116M with nanocoating technology is
priced at $2999.95
