Kontron to Demonstrate Carrier Grade NFV/SDN-enabled Application on the Symkloud Platform at Intel Developer Forum

GENBAND, Wind River collaboration illustrates significant service acceleration benefits of a carrier grade software-defined cloud infrastructure

San Francisco, IDF – Kontron today announced it has collaborated with software vendors GENBAND and Wind River to demonstrate a Network Functions Virtualization (NFV)-enabled Session Border Controller application on the Kontron Symkloud MS2910 2RU high density platform. Supporting the GENBAND SBC Virtualized Network Function (VNF) is a framework for six-nines reliability using Wind River NFV software that enables NFV infrastructure to achieve the carrier grade reliability required for telecom networks.

Kontron will be on hand in the Network Builders Community, Booth 933, during the Intel Developer Forum to discuss how telco and cloud service providers can leverage this scalable solution to reduce both capital expenses (CAPEX) and operating expenses (OPEX) as they progressively deploy NFV in their networks.

“This Virtual Network Function (VNF) collaboration underscores the significant progress made in the industry to give operators the fastest path to achieving a greater level of service without compromising high availability nor performance,” said Philippe Chevallier, Director Product Management and Platform Architecture, Communication Business Unit, Kontron. “Kontron is committed to expanding its integration efforts with partners to ensure service providers can deploy with confidence high density, high availability platforms that are already pre-validated for NFV infrastructure.”

“The Wind River portfolio of NFV solutions delivers the essential carrier grade reliability required for NFV infrastructure. We’re seeing great momentum in the ecosystem for both VNF and hardware providers validating their solutions with our NFV technologies, including Kontron,” said Glenn Seiler, Vice President, Product Management at Wind River. “Showcasing a virtualized Session Border Controller VNF application running on our NFV-ready platform on Symkloud demonstrates Kontron’s deep experience in providing COTS carrier grade hardware designs for service and cloud providers.”

“Offering service providers more choices in their NFV and SDN cloud deployments using our multiple VNF applications and VNF Manager provides numerous competitive advantanges,” said Sanjay Bhatia, Senior Director of Solutions Marketing for GENBAND. “Not only does it provide them with pre-validated choices within NFV ecosystems that utlimately get new services to market faster, but it also allows them to significantly improve their bottom line.”

The Kontron Symkloud MS2910 integrates 10G switching with OpenFlow support, storage, and Intel-based, mix-and-match compute resources on a single highly compact 2RU platform. The Symkloud platform can be easily stacked to share virtual resources on all physical nodes without additional management software required.

Developed by telecom experts, Wind River’s NFV solutions are based on Wind River Open Virtualization with Wind River Linux, optimized real-time Kernel-Based Virtual Machine (KVM++), carrier grade enhancements to OpenStack®, and Intel® Data Plane Development Kit (Intel DPDK) accelerated vSwitch technologies.

Kontron is a member of the Intel Network Builders program, designed to accelerate deployment of software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) solutions. Intel has brought together leading ecosystem vendors to showcase proven solutions that are ready for implementation in production environments.
