Optimal Grinding of Coated Tablets with the Grindomix GM200 from Retsch

When preparing tablets and capsules for the subsequent analysis of their active substances, it is important that the individual tablets are ground up to provide a homogeneous sample mixture. Care should be taken to ensure that the size reduction process does not cause any alteration to, or contamination of, the individual active substances. This is an important criterion when selecting a laboratory mill.

The grinding of coated tablets places special demands on
laboratory mills. The coating is usually made from sugar solutions or gelatin. If mortars or ball mills are used for size reduction then this type of tablet tends to clump because of the unsuitable mechanical stress and produces an inadequate, inhomogeneous sample mixture. Thus, a mill is required that avoids this clumping.

For such applications the Retsch Knife Mill Grindomix GM 200 has
proven itself exceptionally well in practice. The GM 200 is able to grind 20 gelatin-coated tablets in a few seconds with outstanding results and to provide a homogeneous sample for analysis.

Other Retsch mills that can be used for the comminution of homeopathic and other tablets are the Mixer Mill MM 301, the Ultra-Centrifugal Mill ZM 200 and the Mortar Grinders RM 100 and KM 100. These mills allow each pharmaceutical laboratory to prepare samples of tablets and capsules for analysis in an efficient and economic way.
