Original Press Release:

Hoffmann + Krippner Introduces keywi Mediboard in United States

ATLANTA, GA - OCTOBER 10, 2008 - According to Cardinal Health's website for Chasing Zero Summit on Hospital-Acquired Infections (HAIs), HAIs are the second largest patient safety issue that healthcare organizations face every day. More than 90,000 patients die annually and the financial burden is escalating: nearly $20 billion in avoidable costs and lost revenue. As Hospital Administrators, Risk Managers, and Infectious Disease Control Departments seek to decrease their risk of patient infections and their own liability, they might be surprised to find that the answer is right at their fingertips. Literally.

A study by British consumer magazine "Which?" asked a microbiologist to examine 33 keyboard for bacteria and viruses, and 4 of 33 keyboards were judged potential health hazards. The microbiologist recommended the removal of one keyboard as it had 150 times the pass limit of bacteria - five times filthier than a swabbed toilet seat.

Hoffmann + Krippner, an innovative German company, has worked to develop an answer to this ever-present problem: an antimicrobial PC keyboard that significantly decreases the risk of HAIs and other communicable diseases. Hoffmann + Krippner took two concepts in which they have demonstrated expertise for over 35 years - customized input devices and membrane foil printing - and combined them to create the keywi MediBoard.

Hoffmann+Krippner use a special membrane foil coated in Microban and surround it in a completely sealed, beautifully designed exterior housing that is scratch and chemical resistant and withstands common disinfectants. The super flat outer surface of the keyboard is splash-proof according to IP 65 [NEMA 4X] standards, making it quick and easy to clean - an important factor in busy hospital environments. The keywi Mediboard also has individually domed keys, creating excellent tactile response even with gloved hands and has an optional integrated mouse pad. Hoffmann + Krippner's confidence in the antimicrobial technology is evidenced by the fact that they offer a 10-year warranty on the antimicrobial effect of the keywi MediBoard.

Antimicrobial keyboards are advantageous for use in any area that will benefit from consistent protection against bacterial contamination but especially in Hospital Emergency and Operating Rooms where the need for hygienic surroundings are most vital. The sense of urgency that hospital employees must have in order to give patients appropriate attention cannot be at the expense of quality of care and patient safety.

Using an antimicrobial PC keyboard, like the keywi Mediboard, is a significant step forward in the drive to tackle Hospital-Acquired Infections and cut the number of cases of MRSA and other communicable diseases and illnesses.
