E-Switch Introduces New Miniature 5-Position Joystick Navigation Switch

BROOKLYN PARK, MN - E-Switch has introduced a new miniature five-position joystick switch that is designed to replace expensive discrete direction and select switches in consumer electronic products such as digital cameras, cell phones and PDAs. The new 6.70 mm by 5.45 mm JS-1100 Navigator Switch(TM) is designed for surface mount applications and has two mechanical lugs to relieve strain on the electrical connections.

"In consumer products with LCD screens that require a navigating function for right, left, up, down and select, the new JS-1100 Navigator Switch can replace the five discrete switches that are commonly used," says Mark Lakedon, Sr. Applications Engineer for E-Switch. "In addition to being less expensive and more compact than multiple discrete components, the JS-1100 Navigator Switch can reduce assembly time and allow further product miniaturization."

The JS-1100 Navigator Switch features eight gull-wing surface-mount terminations and two mechanical strain-relief lugs. The resistance of the silver-plated contacts averages 0.5 ohms and each contact has a rating of 50 mA @ 12 VDC. The tilt actuation force required is 110 grams ± 70; and the actuation force required for the center-position "select" function is 250 grams ± 80. The JS-1100 Navigator switch has an operating temperature range of -20°C to +70°C, and its mechanical life is estimated to be 50,000 actuations in any direction.
