JMR Electronics Launches Industry's First PCI-Connected Storage Area Network Product at CA World in Las Vegas

JMR Working With CA's BrightStor ARCserve Backup to Provide Low-Cost Disk-Based Backup Storage With Nearly Unlimited Capacity Using Unique Patented Technology

CHATSWORTH, Calif., Nov. 14 /-- JMR Electronics today announced the production release of PSAN, its new PCI Storage Area Network system. Using CA's BrightStor ARCserve Backup with host connectivity provided by JMR's PCI bus expansion, PSAN allows system array growth to several petabytes without loss of performance and a cost well below traditional tape based back up.

While traditional storage-to-host and storage-to-storage connectivity has always included bottlenecks or expensive interface adapters, switches, transceivers or cables, PSAN uses commonly available, inexpensive CAT-6 STP network cable to interconnect storage arrays, using high-speed transmission of PCI bus data without translation to a different bus architecture. Using new-generation ASIC devices which bridge the SATA bus to 64-bit (or wider) PCI bus, arrays of storage devices can be assembled such that 256 PCI targets, each of which contain a plurality of disks, form a very large scale storage system providing higher speed data transfers at lower cost than previously possible.

As an example, using 2005 production disk densities for 3.5" storage devices, such an array can provide a capacity of 1536 PB (Petabytes), or 1,536,000 TB, utilizing low-cost SATA devices without the need to bridge to Fibre Channel, InfiniBand or any other bus. The JMR PSAN bus carries PCI data at full bandwidth across inexpensive twisted pair links to provide both high speed and redundancy-based fault tolerance.

Working with BrightStor ARCserve Backup for storage management and backup, the JMR PSAN solution allows end users to have a truly effective and low cost near line or back up to disk solution. PSAN scales to very large capacities, at a cost well under the $2000 per Terabyte barrier, making it a perfect alternative to tape or other more costly disk based systems.

The PSAN 2U PSAN JBOD product is supplied with dual 450W (N+1) universal input power supplies containing integrated centrifugal blowers which cool all enclosure contents; a quantity of Hitachi Deskstar SATA drives in front-access removable carriers; two power cords; a Windows GUI utility; and a PCI card host controller to provide direct connectivity to P-SAN with user-supplied CAT-6 STP cabling up to ten meters in length.

JMR ELECTRONICS INC. has been issued a Notice of Approval (October 2005) by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on its patent application which details unique design and application elements used in PSAN.

"We feel that PSAN offers users a way to build large scale storage systems with a lower TCO than ever before possible, making it ideal for backup and archiving huge volumes. With current disk drive costs, a PSAN array can achieve a cost of $1,000 per Terabyte once a system scales to just a few P-SAN units," said Josef Rabinovitz, President of JMR ELECTRONICS.

About JMR Electronics

As one of the first manufacturers to develop a complete family of Fibre Channel and SATA storage solutions, JMR offers a wide array of scalable storage systems to handle both bandwidth and I/O-intensive environments. The company's FORTRA family is an advanced, modular storage product line incorporating patented technologies with solutions spanning from 4-, 6-, 8- 10- and 15-bay desktop JBODs to 15- and 16-bay Fibre-to-Fibre and SATA RAID solutions. JMR also manufactures the widest selection of SCSI solutions as well as custom OEM products in its USA-based ISO 9001:2000 facilities. JMR was the first to launch a full SATA RAID solution for the Back-up to Disk and Secondary storage markets. Additional information on JMR and its product offerings can be found at jmr.com
