JDSU Previews New Optical Communications Technology at OFC/NFOEC 2007

MILPITAS, Calif. and ANAHEIM, Calif., March 26 - JDSU, a leading enabler of broadband and optical innovation, will showcase a variety of new developments within its Optical Communications portfolio at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference/National Fiber Optics Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) in Anaheim, California from March 27-29, 2007.

Product demonstrations and previews will include:

Mini-ROADM Technology Preview - JDSU will preview its progress on a new mini-ROADM that will be half the size of a regular ROADM, but will offer all of the same performance and flexibility for remote network traffic management. The mini-ROADM will be designed to meet the reconfigurability and tunability requirements needed in both the metro regional and metro access spaces, as strains on network bandwidth push the need for agile components closer to the edge of networks. Its compact size will also make it a "single slot" solution that saves shelf space on equipment racks, in turn cutting costs for service providers.

Integrated Laser Mach Zehnder Laser Modulator (ILMZ) Preview - As lower cost tunable laser options become a priority for service providers, JDSU will showcase how it is leveraging photonic integration to evolve its reliable tunable technology into a dramatically smaller, highly integrated solution that consumes less power and requires less space within network equipment racks.

"As networks continue to evolve in response to an 'on-demand' world, the need for even more powerful, flexible and cost effective solutions is critical," said Mike Ricci, senior vice president and general manager of Optical Communications at JDSU. "The technology we are showing at OFC illustrates JDSU's commitment to taking network agility to the next level."

SpanExpress(TM) Demonstration - JDSU will introduce and demonstrate its new storage area network (SAN) extension system called SpanExpress, aimed at reducing the cost and complexity of enterprise network management by supporting data transmission distances of up to 200 kilometers without the need for intermediate amplification sites.

The new system supports the growing trend for companies to reach maximum distance between data centers in order to safeguard critical data from unexpected events such as power outages or natural disasters that could adversely affect critical business operations.

"JDSU's SpanExpress system will enable enterprises and carriers to leverage dark fiber solutions to extend SANs and replication technologies that are fiber channel based over longer distances with less latency," said Bob Laliberte, analyst at Enterprise Solutions Group. "Solutions that use SpanExpress also will be more cost effective and less complex."

SpanExpress leverages proven technology called "Raman amplification" to enable wavelengths to travel at longer distances without the need for mid-span amplifiers. The elimination of mid-span sites removes the need for monthly fees associated with renting mid-span sites, and reduces the complexity for service providers related to deploying and managing these sites with a third party.

During OFC/NFOEC, JDSU will demonstrate its SpanExpress system in conjunction with Nortel's Optera Metro 5000 product. A key solution for enterprise applications, the Optera Metro 5000 has been cited as the leading Metro Dense Wave Division Multiplexing transport solution for the past eight years by market research firm Dell'Oro Group.
