IPS Provides John Brown Engineering with Turbine Control Solutions

LONDON -- Turbine Safety Solutions

Invensys Process Systems (IPS), a global technology, software and consulting firm, today announced that it has signed a contract with John Brown Engineering Gas Turbines Ltd., a UK-based engineering firm with more than 30 years success providing engineering, manufacture and service of gas turbine power plants to the worldwide power industry.

Under the terms of the agreement, IPS will supply Tricon(TM) control systems to improve the reliability and availability of three gas turbine units that John Brown is currently repairing and overhauling at its East Kilbride site in Scotland. IPS' state-of-the-art Tricon controller provides fault tolerance by means of triple modular redundant architecture.

"This contract follows several other successful retrofits for John Brown and strengthens the business case for using Tricon controllers when extremely reliable and robust turbomachinery systems are needed," said Ian Govan, Director of IPS Power and Turbomachinery Consultants.

Since 1985, Tricon controllers have been extensively used in more than 7,000 installations in the process industries, impacting a wide range of applications from emergency shutdown systems, burner management systems, and fire and gas systems, to turbomachinery control and protection systems.

"The main reason for choosing Tricon equipment is its proven reliability and availability, especially when installed on turbines that operate in remote locations and where breakdowns have to be kept to an absolute minimum," said Duncan Wilson, JBG Managing Director.

The three controllers are to be used on three General Electric Frame 5 gas turbines. They will be delivered to East Kilbride where JBG overhaul, assemble, test and repackage each turbine as a complete set. This is the first time that Tricon controllers are to be used on these particular turbines. The earlier contracts involved General Electric GE 5001 gas turbines.
