Zultys Releases Power Adapter for IP Phones Compatible with Cisco Proprietary Standard

Supplies power over Ethernet and a 3-port switch, enabling one wire to the desktop

SUNNYVALE, CA, 24 May 2004 - Zultys Technologies today announced the release of the EPA3 Ethernet Power Adapter. This small box makes it possible for IP telephones to receive power from a network supplying power over the Ethernet. The EPA3 also contains a 3-port switch, making it possible to deliver full network bandwidth to a PC or laptop.

Many companies that are deploying VoIP today are choosing to power network devices over the Ethernet wiring using the 802.3af standard or proprietary Cisco in-line power. The EPA3 uses this power as an input and delivers 12 volts to a standard dc power jack on the IP phone. Using the EPA3, an IP phone can be deployed in networks using either type of power over Ethernet, alleviating the need for an ac power adapter. Most IP phones on the market today can receive power from only switches supporting the industry standard IEEE 802.3af. Using the EPA3, these phones can also receive power from Cisco switches.

Many IP phones with multiple Ethernet ports are not capable of switching LAN traffic at 100 Mb/s. The EPA3 solves this problem by providing two 10/100Base-T ports which switch at full line speed, without any performance degradation. One port connects to the IP phone and the other to a PC or other peripheral. LEDs on the front of the box provide indication of power and connection status. The EPA3 is fully compatible with the ZIP 2 phone from Zultys.

"We have customers who have deployed the proprietary power over Ethernet scheme provided by Cisco equipment. The EPA3 is a perfect solution for deploying VoIP in these networks using open standards phones," said Yasuo Nishisaka, General Manager, IP Telephony Business Promotion Division at Nissho Electronics Corporation, a premier distributor of communications and electronics equipment in Japan.

Pricing and Availability

Priced about the same as an ac adaptor, the EPA3 costs $30 in single quantities and is available immediately.
