Cambridge – Leading independent small cell innovator and system builder, ip.access, today announced availability of its second generation small cell product-line based on Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.'s (QTI), a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) small cell chipset. This new compact form-factor device offers high performance, evolved high-speed packet access (HSPA+) support and Wi-Fi + DSL integration options. Developed based on QTI's FSM series chipset, this new product line represents the next generation of volume optimised small cells for enterprise and residential applications.
The new small cells will be shipping starting from the first quarter of 2014 and are already slated for delivery in newly won, high volume projects. The product-line is delivered with an original design manufacturer (ODM) in a move that ip.access says will enable it to offer unrivalled price and performance capability and grow its mass-market deployments.
Announcing the development, Chief Executive Officer Simon Brown said: "We now see far more customer projects moving quickly to volume and it has become increasingly important to match our leading edge technology with those we collaborate with on high performance silicon and manufacturing. This allows us to deliver the volume and performance required by our growing customer base and enlarged product portfolio."
Dan Rabinovitsj, senior vice president of Qualcomm Atheros, Inc. said: "We are seeing sustained growth in the small cell segment and are committed to supporting companies like ip.access with our core technologies to enable them to compete successfully and grow rapidly. With operators facing exponential growth in mobile data over the next five years, we believe our FSM series chipsets are uniquely positioned to deliver cost-effective network densification."
Brown notes that Qualcomm's success in the smartphone sector will become ever more relevant as the requirement for intelligent interaction between networks and handsets becomes critical to delivering the best experience to users.
"Our small cell portfolio is targeted at giving operators the best possible coverage, capacity and network total cost of ownership (TCO), in the smallest possible product footprint," he said. "Qualcomm's track record and expertise allow us to carry its smartphone experience into our residential network products to maximise performance and enhance our new large scale deployments."
Headquartered in the United Kingdom, ip.access has been deploying small cell solutions for more than 10 years providing some 100+ customers around the world with the capability to accelerate the introduction of small cell solutions into their networks irrespective of use case, technology or deployment model.
In 2013, the company became the first provider to pass the milestone of 1million installed small cell access points and also announced that it had been awarded more than 40 operator contracts in the previous year alone.
The company's success is built upon its ability to provide its Service Provider customers with a range of small cell solutions across all technologies (2G, 3G, and 4G), alongside an end-to-end deployment philosophy that integrates the small cell access points with converged access gateways and comprehensive network management and performance tools.
The methodology and solution capability provided by ip.access enables its customers to better manage the economic challenges of delivering against ever more demanding coverage and capacity requirements. This, along with the ease of integration to higher order management solutions and the robust and elegant macro network interaction reduces the ‘cycle time' from installation to commercial service.
In addition, ip.access has focussed diligently on providing the intelligence and application layer to enable its customers to deliver rapid monetisation of their small cell deployments, driving new and complimentary revenue streams to further enhance the small cells business case.
ip.access counts Amadeus Capital Partners, Cisco, Frog Capital, Intel Capital, QUALCOMM, Incorporated, Rothschild, Scottish Equity Partners and TE Connectivity among its shareholders.
