SiliconStor Announces New Interposer Solution to Connect Affordable SATA Drives to Enterprise-Level Fibre Channel and SAS Storage Systems
Fourth Generation SS1320 Active-Active Multiplexer Offers Enhanced Management and System Reliability, Makes SATA Drives Viable Option to SAS
ORLANDO, Fla. and FREMONT, Calif., Oct. 31 -- SiliconStor, Inc., provider of innovative silicon solutions for enterprise storage, today at Storage Networking World announced its fourth generation Active-Active Multiplexer chip, the SS1320. The chip solution enables storage vendors to build a SATA Interposer board that interconnects high capacity SATA drives with enterprise-class features to SAS and Fibre Channel-to-SATA storage systems. SiliconStor's latest performance and management enhancements make affordable SATA drives a viable option for an increasing range of enterprise-level applications such as e-mail, file and web servers, near-line and disk-based backup systems. A member of the Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA), SiliconStor will be available to discuss the technology in the association's booth, #G2, at the show.
The first generation of SAS storage systems are now coming to market," said leading storage analyst Arun Taneja, founder and consulting analyst for Hopkinton, Mass.-based Taneja Group "Enterprise customers, under exceeding pressure to control costs while delivering data-hungry IT initiatives, are looking for ways to leverage SATA drives into large secondary as well as cost-conscious primary storage environments. SiliconStor AAMUX(TM) technology is part of a new value chain of storage componentry for SAS-based storage systems that enables SATA drives to perform at the level of reliability and availability demanded by enterprise storage applications like, active archiving, disk-based backup and regulatory compliance."
Performance, Reliability and Manageability Enhancements
Based on SiliconStor's patent-pending AAMUX technology with an installed base of over 800,000 ports, the new SS1320 delivers the most comprehensive suite of performance, manageability and system resiliency features for this product category. These new features result in significant system level benefits for storage OEMs integrating SATA hard drives including minimizing SATA spin-up delays with improved drive detection times, advanced in-band diagnostic controls for PHY error counter and asynchronous host notification, error and configuration logging, control of drive spin-up and error recovery and resource fencing to deny or enable multiple host access to a SATA disk.
"Our latest SS1320 builds on rigorous field testing over a two-year period in enterprise storage systems to ensure the broadest interoperability with SAS and FC-SATA storage infrastructures," said Joel Warford, vice president of marketing, SiliconStor. "This includes all major SAS controller, SAS expander, FC-SATA routers and switches, and enterprise-class SATA hard drive vendors."
AAMUX Technology Delivers System-Level Reliability, Value in Enterprise Storage Systems
The SiliconStor AAMUX technology enables low cost, high capacity single-ported SATA drives to connect directly to existing dual-port infrastructures, while emulating the high reliability and performance characteristics offered by higher-end Fibre Channel or SAS drives. Like the prior generation device, the SS1320 improves system flexibility and reliability with its enhanced signal conditioning and retiming in addition to granular tuning of transmit amplitude, receive sensitivity and pre-emphasis settings at each port.
Pricing and Availability
The SS1320 is available in a package that is pin-compatible with the current generation SS1300 product enabling easy drop-in implementation to existing OEM-built SATA interposer cards for JBODs, RAID storage arrays and backplane-based servers.
The solution is now available for OEM qualification, with OEM volume pricing under $4.50. SiliconStor also offers a turnkey board solution, the SS9130 SATA Interposer, as well as complete design services for the integration of the AAMUX technology on a SATA Interposer card, depending on OEM customer requirements.
