Rockwell Automation FOUNDATION(TM) Fieldbus Linking Device Enables Logix Control Systems to Cost-Effectively Harness Digital Instrumentation Technology

1757-FFLD FOUNDATION(TM) Fieldbus linking device allows direct connections from Logix controllers to FOUNDATION Fieldbus networks

MILWAUKEE, October 21, 2003 - To enable manufacturers to cost-effectively use digital instrumentation technology in process applications, Rockwell Automation recently introduced the 1757-FFLD FOUNDATION(TM) Fieldbus linking device. Extending the Rockwell Automation line of FOUNDATION Fieldbus interfaces, the 1757-FFLD allows manufacturers to quickly access device health information and reduce start-up time by simplifying the integration of Allen-Bradley® Logix controllers such as ControlLogix®, FlexLogix(TM), CompactLogix(TM), SoftLogix(TM) and ProcessLogix(TM) with FOUNDATION Fieldbus network technology. Manufacturers can use the 1757-FFLD to minimize the programming and costs associated with creating and implementing a highly distributed control system in
environments such as those found in life sciences, food, oil and gas, water/wastewater and brewing and beverage industries.

"With increasing demands to optimize process applications and reduce system life cycle costs, manufacturers are leveraging new digital instrumentation technologies such as FOUNDATION Fieldbus to integrate process measurement with the control system. This allows users to distribute control, reduce installation costs and improve maintenance diagnostics," said Dave Appleby, Manufacturing & Process Solutions product manager, Rockwell Automation. "Our new FOUNDATION Fieldbus linking device helps eliminate costly and time-consuming device integration by enabling the direct connection of Allen-Bradley Logix controllers with FOUNDATION Fieldbus devices. Manufacturers can now marry process, motion, discrete and sequential operations with the remote processing power of FOUNDATION Fieldbus technology."

The 1757-FFLD links FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1 and High Speed Ethernet (HSE) networks while providing dual, concurrent communications with EtherNet/IP(TM). This allows manufacturers to use EtherNet/IP for discrete applications and/or HSE for process applications on the same network. In addition, the 1757-FFLD enables manufacturers to add local I/O modules to incorporate non-FOUNDATION Fieldbus devices into the FOUNDATION Fieldbus control environment.

The 1757-FFLD features a graphical development environment to configure FOUNDATION Fieldbus networks and devices, while Rockwell Software® RSLogix(TM) 5000 programming software provides a built-in interface to connect Logix data tags to FOUNDATION Fieldbus device block parameters. An OPC® HSE server interface enables any OPC-based software, such as a human-machine interface (HMI) software package like Rockwell Software RSView(TM), to access FOUNDATION Fieldbus device data-giving users a holistic view of plant floor instrumentation.
