SiliconStor Unveils Enterprise SATA Interposer Solution Utilizing the Now Shipping SS1300 Active-Active Multiplexer

Fully Tested and Interoperable SS9130 SATA Interposer Card Speeds OEM Time to Market for Supporting SATA Drives in Enterprise Storage Systems

FREMONT, Calif., March 29 / -- SiliconStor, Inc., provider of innovative silicon solutions for enterprise storage, today unveiled its SS9130 Serial ATA (SATA) Interposer, an interface card designed to greatly accelerate OEM implementation of the company's SS1300 AAMUX(TM) active-active multiplexer device for interconnecting SATA hard drives to enterprise storage midplanes. Also today, the company announced that the SS1300 AAMUX is now shipping in full production worldwide. Both products will be showcased at Storage Networking World, San Diego at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in FCIA booth #G-10.

Based on 3rd generation patent-pending AAMUX technology with an installed base of over 400,000 ports, the SS9130 SATA Interposer card provides storage system manufacturers with a complete ready-made solution for adding low cost, high capacity SATA hard drives to enterprise storage systems.

Greg Shulz, founder and senior analyst for Stillwater, Minn. Storage IO said, "Because SATA hard drives offer a compelling cost-capacity advantage over the alternative Fibre Channel or SAS drives, storage OEMs can significantly reduce cost by incorporating SATA into systems targeted at nearline and a growing number of primary storage applications. The SiliconStor AAMUX product line enables this trend by complementing SATA drives with the required features to operate well in enterprise applications."

"The SS1300 AAMUX device increases system performance and reliability by enhancing SATA drives with enterprise-class features like dual active-active ports, advanced signal conditioning, and more resilient error handling," said Joel Warford, vice president of marketing for SiliconStor. "With the SS9130 SATA Interposer card, OEMs can now quickly introduce more cost-effective and reliable SATA alternatives by eliminating the months of time necessary to design and test their own SATA Interposer around our SS1300 device."

SS9130 Interposer Card Saves OEM Development Time and Speeds Time-to-Market
The SiliconStor SS9130 Interposer card consists of the SS1300 AAMUX device, a dual SATA or SAS-STP host interface, a SATA device interface, and the necessary support components and layout circuitry to provide an optimum interposer for connecting SATA drives to a SAS or adapted Fibre Channel infrastructure. "For over two years, SiliconStor has designed interposers on a case-by-case basis for a multitude of customer systems, covering three generations of our products," said SiliconStor CEO Mike Ofstedahl. "Providing a complete turnkey SATA Interposer subsystem is a result of SiliconStor's ongoing effort to provide more value to our OEM customers enabling them to focus on system level development."

SS1300 Lowers Cost, Improves Reliability of Connecting SATA Drives in Enterprise Systems
The SS1300 AAMUX features an integrated voltage regulator and optimized packaging and pin-out for lowering cost and reducing component count on interposer/dongle implementations. In addition, the SS1300 improves system flexibility and reliability with its enhanced signal conditioning and retiming as well as granular tuning of transmit amplitude, receive sensitivity and pre-emphasis settings at each port. Beyond testing with existing Fibre Channel systems adapted for SATA, SS1300 has been comprehensively tested for robust interoperability with the SAS storage infrastructure and new enterprise-capable SATA hard drives being offered by multiple vendors.

"Requiring highly reliable, high capacity storage, applications such as e-mail, file and web servers and near-line and disk based backup systems are driving tremendous growth in the enterprise SATA hard drive segment," said Hubbert Smith, director of enterprise marketing of Lake Forest, Calif.-based storage provider WD. "Together WD RE2 hard drives and SiliconStor AAMUX technology deliver great systems-level reliability and strong value."
