Flange Stacking Interconnects(TM) Provide Robust Standoff Solutions for PCB Stacking

San Diego, CA. - - Autosplice's new Flange Stacking Interconnects(TM) (FSI) offer manufacturers a highly adaptable machine-insertable solution for efficiently creating a variety of stacked PCB assemblies. Flange Stacking Interconnects incorporate a specially designed flange that ensures a consistent physical standoff distance and also promotes formation of uniformly robust annular-ring solder joints to deliver optimal strength for the higher retention forces needed in many stacked PCB designs.

FSI components can be auto-inserted into the first PCB or daughter-board assembly, providing a consistent and reliable interface using Autosplice's proven interference fit technologies, such as knurled pin or star pin configurations. The first assembly is then inserted through solderpaste into plated through holes in the second PCB (motherboard) with the flanges coming to rest against the PCB pad surfaces, at the required standoff distance.

The unique FSI flange design includes a series of notches around the stand-off rings' periphery that allow for out-gassing to relieve pressures, which normally can build up in the plated through holes during reflow soldering processes. As a result, FSI interconnect technology automatically overcomes the tendency of some lighter daughter boards to lift off of the pads before solid solder joints can be formed.

Available in either standard or high-conductivity copper alloys, FSI components provide robust electrical interfaces with the plated through holes and solder pads. The ability of FSI pins to provide full copper throughout the barrel of the plated hole offers a significant current carrying advantage over SMT alternatives, which can be especially important for implementing power supply and power regulation applications.

Using Autosplice's flexible tooling and cold-forming processes, continuously reeled FSI "flange pins" can be manufactured to accommodate a wide range of specific customer requirements, such as different pin lengths, standoff distances or the type and location of press-fit features. The inherent adaptability of the basic FSI design also allows for the efficient implementation of low-profile and high-density board stacking applications required in many of today's power supply, communications and automotive products.

All FSI components can be machine inserted using standard Autosplice automated applicator equipment, ranging from low-cost compact bench-top CNC platforms up through high-speed stand-alone or in-line insertion systems capable of up to 20,000 components per hour. This platform flexibility enables Flange Stacking Interconnects to be cost-effectively designed into a variety of stacked PCB assemblies in both high-mix and high-volume production environments.
