Intelligent Traffic System of World-Famous Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Protected by Falcon SSG Series Industrial UPS

Falcon's Wide Temperature SSG Series Uninterruptible Power Supplies Protect Vital Highway Signs and Monitoring Equipment Against Power Disruptions

IRWINDALE, Calif. – Falcon Electric, Inc., a leader in on-line UPS and backup power form mission-critical applications deployed in harsh environments, announces that more than a dozen of its SSG Series uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units have been protecting the Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge since August 2013 against power outages. This double-decker suspension bridge serves as a vital connection between Staten Island and Brooklyn, New York, with at least 195,00 vehicles crossing it daily. With such heavy traffic – especially during rush-hour commuting highway signs an traffic monitoring and control equipment must operate optimally at all times. Fortunately, Falcon Electric's SSG Series Industrial UPSs work seamlessly 24/7, ensuring efficient travel to and from destinations.

Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) are made up of mission-critical electronic systems including computers, vehicle location sensors, toll equipment, cameras, monitoring and control equipment operating 24/7 in oftentimes harsh environmental conditions. If any of these systems lose power, real-time traffic information can be compromised, leading to dangerous safety issues.

"Off-the-shelf power protection is simply not designed to protect the power demands of ITS equipment," said Rick Doub, vice president of sales for Falcon Electric. "Our SSG Series was selected for the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge project because it is the only wide-temperature on-line UPS that meets UL 508 standards, assuring safety, code compliance and power protection inside industrial control panels. The SSG UPS units are designed to withstand harsh temperature environments that would destroy other UPS prodocts. The SSG's high-grade components and 10-year rated batteries deliver clean, continuous back-up power to "always-on" ITS equipment."

Wide-Temperature Operation:

Falcon's SSG Industrial UPSs operate from -20°C to 55°C (-4°F to 131°F) and the SSG-RP High Temperature UPS operates from -30°C to 65°C (-22°F to 149°F). Moreover, this dual-conversion on-line or "true" UPS meets UL 1778 and UL 508, as well as multiple agency (UL, cUL and CE) listings for wide- temperature operation.

NEMA Enclosures and Battery Options:

The SSG family is available in "ready-to-deploy" NEMA-rated enclosures. The unique capability of the UPSs to operate in a wide temperature range eliminates the need for installing air conditioning or heating inside the enclosure – saving time, money and additional points of failure. For further peace-of- mind, users can add hours of battery runtime with additional external battery packs including Falcon's award-winning wide-temperature 40Amp-hour battery pack.
