New, Faster RoboDrill CNC Offers Hesitation-Free 3-D Contouring at High Feed Rates

SUDBURY, MA - Standard on all RoboDrills, the Fanuc 16iMB Intelligent CNC control is typically found only on machines costing two to three times more. The new 16iMB encoders deliver 16,000,000 pulses per revolution for exceptional contouring accuracy and surface finishes on complex 3-D parts. With 3-axis high-resolution velocity (HRV) control, the 16iMB CNC optimizes axis motion, reduces machining cycle times, offers circularity potential to 0.00011" TIR, and dramatically reduces spindle thermal growth.

High-speed control functions include bell-shaped acceleration/deceleration, in-position width switching for rapid traverse/cutting feed, and rapid-traverse overlapping. Tool Life Management and Monitoring function measures the load on the cutting tool, automatically modifies the feed rate, and replaces worn tools to optimize cutting conditions. QuickSide,(TM) a RoboDrill-exclusive, user-friendly intuitive menu, simplifies operator functions such as setup, tool life management, and maintenance. Standard ethernet capability permits the rapid transfer of CNC programs between CAM systems and the control. An inexpensive memory card allows storage of parameters, programs, and tool offsets.

The 32-bit Modeler Control has a standard 1-millisecond block processing speed with an optional upgrade to 0.4 milliseconds. An optional 500-block "look-ahead" function enables precise motion control and reduces servo lag and spindle dwell.

Other CNC options provide still greater milling speed and precision. With a 180-block look-ahead for feed rates up to 1181 IPM, AI Nano Contour Control software interpolates commands in nanometers for ultra-high-precision digital machining. The High-Precision Contour Control package uses a 64-bit RISC board and a 500-block look-ahead to provide smooth, accurate motion at feed rates up to 2362 IPM. NURBS interpolation software produces exceptional surface finishes from smaller programs than required with conventional linear interpolation.

The beefy 30-taper RoboDrill is the ideal machining center for even the toughest metals. It is capable of 1.5 G accelerations, rigid tapping to 6000 rpm, high-speed reverse tapping, and 0.9-second tool changes (tool-to-tool) with simultaneous table movement. Recent enhancements such as thermal compensation and thread milling improve milling speed, accuracy, and flexibility.
