RF Arrays, Inc. Delivers World's Smallest Zigbee® Optimized Integrated Front End

3x3 mm package enables complete front end capability with LNA, PA, power detector and switch.

PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 20 -- RF Arrays Inc. today announced the world's smallest front end solution optimized for Zigbee(R) modules and other ISM band applications. The RIF211 delivers industry-leading performance for Power and Low Noise Amplifier and antenna switch in a 3x3 mm package coupled with an external component count of just 2 bi-pass capacitors. The RIF211 reduces Power Amplifier power consumption significantly vs. currently available solutions, making it ideal for embedding Zigbee(R) capability into portable, battery powered industrial and consumer electronics.

The device addresses the growing demand for embedded Zigbee(R) capability in electronic equipment where board space is at a premium and power consumption needs to be minimized. Target devices include long range Zigbee(R) devices, cordless phones and wireless video and data links.

As Zigbee(R) technology is maturing and costs are dropping more and more devices are looking to add connectivity. In field deployments the range that most modules can achieve with the integrated amplifiers on the transceivers is only a few meters. By integrating the RIF211 into 2.4 Ghz equipment dramatic increase in range can be realized.

The RIF211 provides an optimized solution for battery powered nodes. The FEM has been designed to greatly enhance the link budget of 2.4 Ghz modules with minimal additional current draw. Rupert Prince, Executive Vice president RF Arrays Inc. said, "With this new Front end device, RF Arrays is enabling OEMs to embed Zigbee(R) and other wireless protocols in a series of challenging new applications while simultaneously shrinking form factors, extending battery life and meeting aggressive cost targets."

The ultra compact front end features a power amplifier with a current draw of 120 mA whilst transmitting at 20 dBm output. The MMIC includes a high gain very low noise LNA which will greatly improve the link budget for 2.4 Ghz systems (LNA Gain = 15 dB, NF < 1.0 dB), as well biasing circuitry in a miniature 16-pin 3 x 3 x 0.5 mm QFN package. The FEM is fully matched internally to a 50 ohm output and input impedance.

Availability and Price
The RIF211 is in production now, priced at US $2.76 in 1k unit quantities.
