Insitec On-Line Particle Size Analysis Cuts Toner Manufacturing Costs

6 May 2008: Malvern, UK: A major Japanese toner manufacturer is finding the
Insitec LPS on-line particle size analyzer from Malvern Instruments 'indispensable' for process control. The Insitec LPS is suitable for a wide range of wet processes and measures particles in the 0.1 to 1000 micron size range. To date more than eight Insitec LPS systems have been installed at a number of the company's chemical production plants, and others are being added on a regular basis. Use of the analyzers is cutting manufacturing costs dramatically.

Particle size directly influences toner performance and is therefore tightly controlled during its manufacture. The real-time particle size measurements delivered by the Insitec LPS can be used to automate this control, reducing waste and enhancing product quality.

The Insitec LPS systems have been fully integrated into existing production control platforms, becoming essential pieces of process equipment. Designed specifically for industrial use they deliver reliable 24/7 operation with minimal maintenance, and can be tailored to meet the demands of specific applications.

Toner production has changed significantly in recent years, with manufacturers increasingly adopting chemical, polymerization-based production methods in place of wet or dry milling. Such processes deliver improved control of particle size and shape. Both parameters influence print quality and the behaviour of toner in the printer. www.malvern.com

About Malvern Instruments
Malvern Instruments provides a range of complementary materials characterization tools that deliver inter-related measurements reflecting the complexities of particulates and disperse systems, nanomaterials and macromolecules. Analytical instruments from Malvern are used in the characterization of a wide variety of materials, from industrial bulk powders to the latest nanomaterials and delicate macromolecules. A broad portfolio of innovative technologies is combined with intelligent, user-friendly software. These systems deliver industrially relevant data enabling our customers to make the connection between micro (such as particle size) and macro (bulk) material properties (rheology) and chemical composition (chemical imaging).

Particle size distribution, particle shape information, zeta potential, molecular weight, chemical composition, and bulk materials properties can all be determined with instruments from the Malvern range. The company's laboratory, at-line, on-line and in-line solutions are proven in sectors as diverse as cement production and pharmaceutical drug discovery.

Headquartered in Malvern, UK, Malvern Instruments has subsidiary organizations in all major European markets, North America, China, Korea and Japan, a joint venture in India, a global distributor network and applications laboratories around the world. www.malvern.com
