Markem Adds New Ink Jet Coder and Hot Melt Inks

New Additions to the Company's Full Range of Hot Melt Ink Jet Technology Solutions

Keene, N.H. (December 2, 2002) - MARKEM Corporation, a leading provider of identification systems, software, supplies and services for product coding and marking, has added the Model 5200SC hot melt ink jet printer to its portfolio of products. MARKEM's Model 5200SC now joins the MARKEM 5000 Series of coding products, which support both small and large character ink jet applications. When combined with newly developed 5106 Touch Dry® ink, formulated to adhere to a range of substrates, MARKEM 5000 Series machines can now print on films, rigid plastics, shrink wraps and coated inner cartons, making them ideal for use in both primary coding and case coding applications.

The new MARKEM Model 5200SC printer, like other MARKEM 5000 Series products provides a high-quality code and is capable of printing real-time and variable information as well as readable bar codes. Additionally, Touch Dry hot melt inks, provide users with easier handling and cleaner production when compared to the wet inks used in continuous ink jet (CIJ) systems. Touch Dry inks are non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and contain no solvents, reducing the risk of tainted food products and minimizing disposal issues created by environmental compliance laws.

The MARKEM 5000 Series coders offer the maximum uptime of any ink jet system on the market. Additionally, the MARKEM 5000 Series offers the capability of printing in excess of 400 feet per minute, a print swath of 2.56 inches, and multiple time and date formats.

MARKEM's 5000 Series coders feature an advanced control panel with an easy-to-read graphic display, and intuitive, user-friendly software making them simple and quick to set text, design images and import graphics. Using CimControl(TM) data management software, they can also be networked for centralized control and remote operation.

Another key element of the 5000 Series is the newly developed Touch Dry 5005 hot melt ink. This ink allows coders to print much faster than previously possible while still printing high quality codes even at low-density settings. Both the 5005 and the 5106 offer superior darkness, excellent smudge and abrasion resistance, as well as package-to-package offset resistance.

As part of MARKEM's product portfolio of "Intelligent Coding" solutions, the Model 5200SC ink jet coder adds to MARKEM's breadth of ink jet technologies, which include the MARKEM 5000 Series and MARKEM 9000 Series printers. In addition, MARKEM offers a range of other front-to end-of line product solutions in technologies such as laser, thermal transfer, print-and-apply, and rotary. Also, adding MARKEM's Uptime(TM) Total Services Program - a comprehensive service, support and training program - ensures that customers achieve maximum uptime from any MARKEM product.
