Dow Corning Introduces Silastic® 100% F-LSR

Breakthrough for Extreme-temperature, Fuel-resistant parts for Automotive Manufacturing

Dow Corning today introduced Silastic® 100% Fluoro Liquid Silicone Rubber (F-LSR), a new fully fluorinated two-part injection moldable elastomer designed to meet increasingly stringent automotive engine temperature, fuel and oil resistance specifications while improving environmental sustainability during manufacturing.

This breakthrough solution combines the ease of processing of liquid silicone rubber (LSR) with the temperature and fuel resistance characteristics of fluorosilicone rubber (FSR) to improve manufacturing efficiency and part performance.

"Designers no longer have to trade off between part performance and manufacturing costs," said Rachelle Jacques, Dow Corning automotive market leader. "Silastic 100% F-LSR provides added design freedom. It is easy to work with, maintains its properties across extreme high and low temperatures, and enables parts to operate consistently while in contact with aggressive fuels, chemicals, lubricants and oils."

Silastic 100% F-LSR provides labor savings, higher equipment capacity and reduced scrap rates to customers currently using high consistency fluorosilicone rubber. Automated injection molding with Silastic 100% F-LSR makes possible the production of intricately-designed, high-quality, high-precision parts. In addition, LSR injection molders can now supply fuel resistant parts.

Parts manufactured with Silastic 100% F-LSR are able to withstand harsh temperatures from -60°C to +220°C, fuel, chemical, lubricant and oil environments, and outperform parts manufactured with the existing copolymer fluorosilicone options. This translates into greater durability and extended part-life.

Silastic 100% F-LSR is particularly well-suited for co-molding on thin, high-precision and intricate parts with close tolerances in automotive, aerospace, appliance, business machine and electrical applications where harsh environments exists.

Silastic 100% F-LSR complements the existing line of Silastic® LSRs. It is easier to mix and process than high consistency FSRs, and can be processed at lower temperatures than standard Silastic LSR.

Marco Pagliani and Emmanuel Bravais from Dow Corning Engineered Elastomers will present Silastic 100% F-LSR at High Performance Elastomers 2007 at 5:00 pm, December 5th in Frankfurt, Germany.
