Infrared Transceiver offers 18 m remote control distance.

Press Release Summary:

Integrating Remote Control receiver and IrDA transceiver into single, 3-lens, surface-mount package, Model TFDU7100 receives signals with carrier frequencies from 20-60 kHz over minimum distance of 5 m. For IrDA communication, units supports IrDA data rates up to 4 Mbit/s over inherently secure distance of 1 m. When assembled into notebook or multimedia computer, TFDU7100 enables remote control of video or music playback and wireless sharing of photo, MP3, and other file formats.

Vishay Integrates IrDA Transceiver And Remote Control Receiver In 3-Lens Package For Multimedia PC And TVs

New Device Touts 18-Meter Remote Control Distance and an IrDA Data Rate of up to 4 Mbit/s

MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA - December 4, 2006 - Vishay Intertechnology is broadening its optoelectronics portfolio with a new device integrating a Remote Control receiver and an IrDA transceiver into a single, 3-lens, surface-mount package for the PC market.

When assembled into a notebook or multimedia computer, the new TFDU7100 enables several functions including remote control of video or music playback and wireless sharing of photo, MP3, and other file formats. By consolidating all these functions in a single package, the TFDU7100 allows designers of PC housings to limit the number of daylight filtering windows and thus avoid a tradeoff between Remote Control and IrDA functionality.

Integrated within the TFDU7100's 8-pin package are two high-speed PIN photodiodes, an infrared emitter, an IrDA control IC, and a Remote Control IC. For Remote Control, the TFDU7100 meets Microsoft®'s Media Center specifications by receiving signals with carrier frequencies from 20 kHz to 60 kHz over a minimum distance of 5 meters. Its maximum receiving distance is18 meters in the 36-kHz to 38-kHz range. For IrDA communication, the TFDU7100 supports all IrDA data rates up to 4 Mbit/s over the inherently secure distance of 1 meter.

To simplify the transition to the TFDU7100, the package is the same size and pad pitch as the Vishay 4-Mbit/s transceiver used in 80 % of IrDA-enabled notebook PCs today. Providing added flexibility, the device can be mounted with lenses in side- or top-looking orientation. The TFU7100 IrDA plus RC transceiver operates from 2.7 V to 5.5 V over the full temperature range of -25°C to +85°C. It is lead (Pb)-free, capable of lead-free processing, and in compliance with RoHS 2002/95/EC and WEEE 2002/96/EC.

The TFDU7100 IrDA plus RC transceiver is available now. Lead time is six weeks. Pricing for U.S. delivery is $1.50 each for one million units per year.
