Optek's Surface Mount Series Packs High Power Infrared LED in 0805 Chip

OP200 miniature LED is among industry's smallest surface mount packaged devices...

CARROLLTON, TEXAS (August 3, 2005) - Delivering a high power infrared sensor in an ultra-miniature surface mount package, TT electronics OPTEK Technology has developed an infrared LED mounted in a 0805 chip package. Designated the OP200, the GaAlAs devices are among the smallest packaged surface mount IR LEDs in the industry.

"The availability of these new 0805 IR LEDs enables design engineers to incorporate infrared sensing into portable electronic devices, such as mobile phones, that require smaller surface mount components," said Dave Birtalan, vice-president of OPTEK Technology's components business unit. "Not only are the OP200 devices RoHS compliant, but they are also compatible with high-speed automated placement systems, making them ideal for high-volume applications."

Other applications for the OP200 devices include non-contact position sensors, machine automation systems and miniature optical encoders.

According to Birtalan, the OP200 LEDs are part of a major expansion of OPTEK's surface mount infrared components, which will include IR LEDs and silicon NPN phototransistors in 1206 chip size packages; 1.9mm plastic packages, and PLCCs (plastic leadless chip carriers) in a variety of mounting styles and lensing options.

The OP200 devices are GaAlAs infrared LEDs (880nm wavelength), packaged in a 0805 chip with a flat molded lens which provides a wide beam angle and an evenly distributed emission pattern.

Electrical performance of the OP200 is characterized at 30V reverse voltage, 1.5V forward voltage, 50mA continuous forward current and power dissipation of 130mW at 25°C. The device produces 0.2 mW/cm2 apertured power at 20mA forward current. They are RoHS-compliant, as well as compatible with high temperature (260°C) lead free soldering processes, and are rated for operation from -25°C to +85°C.

The OP200 devices are designed to be mechanically and spectrally matched to OPTEK's OP520 Series silicon NPN phototransistors.

Typical pricing for the OP200 sensors starts at $0.20 each in quantities of 2,500 pieces, with samples available immediately. Production quantity lead time, if stock is not available, is 4 to 6 weeks.
