New FLIR ThermaCAM® P65 INFRaRED Camera Automates Capture, Analysis, and Archiving Of Thermal Images

High-resolution P65 is Bluetooth® voice-enabled; comes with FireWire®, USB, and IrDA connectivity, AVI storage, automatic target illuminator, and more

N. Billerica, MA (July 29, 2004) - FLIR Systems (NASDAQ: FLIR), the global leader in infrared cameras, announces the launch of the new ThermaCAM P65 infrared camera. A wide assortment of advanced features enables the professional thermographer to work with greater efficiency and productivity than ever before. This high-resolution camera offers unique new features that reduce the workload on the individual thermographer while enhancing worker safety and efficiency of operation.

"The P65 is the most highly refined, versatile infrared inspection system available today, bar none," says Tom Scanlon, Vice President of FLIR Americas Thermography Products. "It improves on what is already the most advanced IR package in the industry."

New features on the P65 - at 4.4 pounds, the lightest full-featured infrared camera available - include:
o Voice recording - up to 30 seconds with each image - utilizing world-standard Bluetooth wireless technology, with a cordless earpiece eliminating all cable connections to increase operator safety and mobility
o FireWire (IEEE 1394b) connectivity, enabling the transfer of digital video at up to 800 megabits per second, plus USB and IrDA connectivity
o Onboard AVI video storage, allowing the recording of non-radiometric moving images for convenient playback using industry-standard players; plus radiometric burst recording for capturing moving targets in sequences up to 20 seconds long at 30 Hz
o A brilliant LED target illuminator that automatically turns on when the visual digital camera function is selected.

The wireless Bluetooth voice recording eliminates the need for a cable between headset and camera, greatly enhancing operator safety. Voice comments up to 30 seconds long are associated with their respective image and can be played back in the camera and also from the final report on a PC when created with ThermaCAM Reporter 7 software.

With a thermal sensitivity of 0.08°C, the P65 can detect and capture extremely small temperature differences in crisp, high-resolution 16-bit thermal images. Its real-time video scan rate (60 Hz) allows it to record fast moving objects without image smear. Its state-of-the-art 320 x 240 uncooled microbolometer detector reduces P65 startup time to seconds. Ergonomic, intuitive controls make operation seamless and efficient. A user-friendly joystick, familiar menus, and soft control buttons on the camera body and a redundant set of controls on the removable handle provide easy one-handed operation.

The P65 offers a host of automatic features that enable the thermographer to obtain maximum quality images under demanding field conditions. For example, the P65 automatically and continuously adjusts its temperature span and auto-focuses at the touch of a button to obtain optimal quality images. It also can automatically track the position of the hottest spot in the image, indicate its temperature, and instantly calculate the difference between different measurement points. Sound and color alarms warn when targets exceed temperature maximums set by the user.

The P65 can be set to automatically capture a sequence of images at preset intervals to record dynamic phenomena at intervals down to 1/30 second. A built-in visual camera provides digital "visual" images and automatically links them to the corresponding thermal images. The new, bright LED target light comes on when the visual digital camera function is selected and assures that darkly lit subjects are illuminated for optimal exposure. In addition, the laser LocatIR(TM) projects a bright red dot on the target in the center of the camera's field of view to facilitate orientation in the field.

The P65 stores images as radiometric JPEGs on a removable CompactFlash® memory card or in internal flash RAM. This powerful file format provides two key advantages: images can be readily inserted into standard word processing and desktop publishing applications; and because the format preserves temperature data, images can be thermally analyzed on the P65 itself or on a PC after downloading using ThermaCAM Reporter software. This capability makes life easier for thermographers in the field, especially under stressful conditions. All the thermographer has to do is point-freeze-store crisp images, which can be analyzed and manipulated later.

The P65's built-in color viewfinder and soft eye-cup is ideal for outdoor use, even in bright sunlight. The detachable 4-inch color LCD on the camera's remote-control carrying handle adjusts to any angle for optimal viewing, or can be removed, allowing the operation of the camera with the redundant controls on the handle and viewing of images while the camera itself is positioned in hard-to-reach areas.

Designed for use in harsh environments, the P65 has an industrial shock rating and an IP54 complete environmental encapsulation. A series of optional wide-angle through telescopic lenses are available to meet diverse application requirements. Also available are miniature, wearable infrared heads-up displays (IR-HUD), which can augment situational awareness. The P65 operates on compact, long-life lithium-ion batteries, which are rechargeable from both 12VDC and 120VAC sources, and can also be operated without batteries directly from such external power sources.

ThermaCAM QuickView(TM) software, included with the P65, enables the generation of basic reports and the downloading of images to a PC. Available ThermaCAM Reporter reporting and analysis software reduces the task of generating custom reports to simple drag-and-drop. ThermaCAM Database software enables the trending, archiving and organization of inspection data and reports quickly and easily. ThermaCAM Image Builder software knits multiple IR images together to create a single radiometric composite.
