Leviton Introduces New Backwire Clamp Design on Commercial and Industrial Switches

Little Neck, NY, July 18, 2005 - Leviton has enhanced its line of commercial and industrial switches with an ergonomic external backwire clamp design on many of its single-pole and three-way switch models. The new external clamp design, already available for several Leviton wiring device lines, such as the Industrial line of V-O MAX TM receptacles and motor starter switches, offers faster and more convenient installation. The new design will eventually be offered on many Leviton switch and receptacle models. By eliminating internal back wiring holes, installation is streamlined. The installer simply inserts the wire under the external clamp, which is now serrated for better gripping retention, and tightens the terminal screws to the proper torque value.

As with previous switch models, the terminal screws on the new devices accommodate 12-14 AWG wire with feed through wiring easily permitted. The new external clamp design also facilitates side wiring because the terminals screws install securely in place and are not "floating." This feature significantly eases installation. Because the clamp is external visual confirmation that the wires are securely in place can more easily be made.

Leviton's Industrial switches feature color-coded body covers to denote amperage (blue, red, or green for 15, 20, or 30 AMP), rugged thermoplastic toggles and housings, and large silver-cadmium oxide contacts that prevent sticking, excessive pitting, and welding. They are UL 20 and UL Fed Spec.WS896E listed, and CSA C22.2 No.111 certified.

The external clamp design is currently available for the company's 1201 and 1221 Single Pole series; 1203 and 1223 Three-Way series; CSB1 Single Pole and CSB3 Three-Way series; Canadian 18201 and 18221 Single Pole; and Canadian 18203 and 18223 Three-Way series with additional products to follow.
