Indra to Implement Its Contactless Ticketing Technology in Calcutta Metro for Euros 6M

Indra, the premier IT company in Spain and a leading IT multinational in Europe, in cooperation with its local partner Keltron, was awarded a contract with CRIS (Centre for Railway Information Systems) to implement its access control and ticketing systems in Calcutta Metro for Euros 6M. Indra, in cooperation with CRIS for the development of the project, becomes technology partner of the company. CRIS was a creation of India's Ministry of Railways and is in charge of the technology development of the railway networks of the country Indian Railways (IR).
The project includes the design, supply, installation and startup of an integral ticketing system for Metro Railway Kolkata. It is India's oldest metro line and it crosses Calcutta from North to South, covering over 25 km. Indra will replace the 20 years-old system as its maintenance is too expensive and complex, with new access control systems and both manual and automated ticketing systems.
The new solution will be equipped with contactless technology since regular passengers will use multi journey electronic cards and token-widely used in Asia -for one way trip. Both systems facilitate passenger flow as the tickets are validated via radio frequency by means of contactless access control systems.
The system implemented by Indra will be able to coexist with the new East-West metro line under construction in the city.
With this contract, Indra progresses in its goal of reinforcing its presence in emerging markets in Asia and reaffirms its position in the traffic and transport sector in the continent. This year, the company was awarded a contract to implement its ticketing technology in the Kuala Lumpur railways in Malaysia and is currently engaged in the projects of Mumbai monorail and metro and Delhi's new light rail to the airport.

Besides the ticketing projects above mentioned, Indra has recently been awarded important contracts in Asia. In the sector of air traffic, Indra was awarded the modernisation of the control centres of Xian and Chengdu in China which coordinate the upper airspace of eight provinces covering an area similar to Western Europe in extension. In addition to this, China's Civil Aviation authority commissioned a surveillance network to cover 60% of the country's air space. It will also implement, this time in India, nine radar stations and will equip 38 airports with its air traffic management systems, which represents the most significant contract in terms of supplies awarded in the last years worldwide.
Indra is also upgrading the systems of The Central Bank of Bangladesh. In addition to this, it is also in charge of Meralco's global technology outsourcing, the largest electricity company of Philippines and provides services to the main companies of the country's energy sector such as: Visayas Electric Corporation (VECO), the second distribution company of the country; Cepalco; National Power Corporation (NPC), second in power generation; or Energy Development Corporation (EDC), the largest company of geothermal power; among others.
Regarding Public Administrations, the Spanish company finished a project for the Supreme Court of Philippines to modernise justice administration in the country.
