Vital Images and R2 Technology Launch Fully Integrated Lung CAD Solution

Clinically Validated ImageChecker® CT Lung CAD and Advanced Visualization Applications on Vitrea® Bring Higher Level of Workflow Efficiency

MINNEAPOLIS and SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 17 -- Vital Images, Inc. (NASDAQ:VTAL), a leading provider of enterprise-wide advanced visualization and analysis software solutions, and R2 Technology, Inc. (R2), a leader in computer aided detection (CAD) technology for the earlier detection of breast cancer, actionable lung nodules and other abnormalities, recently launched the next-generation Vitrea® solution, featuring the seamless integration of R2 Technology's ImageChecker® CT Lung CAD software. Designed with an intricate understanding of the thoracic clinical workflow, R2's clinically validated lung CAD solution improves the detection of solid lung nodules during review of multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) exams and the integrated solution improves workflow efficiency in lung analysis on the Vitrea workstation.

"The increased number of thinner and thinner lung CT images generated from thoracic MDCT examinations has increased the demands on the clinical radiologist and has mandated significant workflow efficiencies," said Ella A. Kazerooni, MD, Professor and Director of Cardiothoracic Radiology, University of Michigan Health Systems. "R2's clinically validated lung CAD solution has been proven to increase detection accuracy and quantifiable temporal change in lung nodule analysis. We can now easily and consistently integrate CAD findings into the exam workflow via Vitrea."

Vital Images' flagship product, Vitrea, creates 2D, 3D and 4D images of human anatomy from CT and MR (magnetic resonance) image data. The fully- integrated CT Lung CAD solution includes automatic detection of pulmonary nodules, AutoPoint(TM) -- automatic temporal comparison of pulmonary nodules, pulmonary artery patency examination (PE(TM)) detection software and a flexible, but consolidated reporting feature scalable to the unique requirements of a clinical enterprise. The integration of the two high- performance solutions enhances the signature anticipatory automation of Vitrea's workflow, ensuring an intuitive, fast and easy-to-use solution.

"The integration of two best-of-breed solutions is the vision behind the Vital Images and R2 relationship. The result is a powerful detection and analysis tool that for the first time, truly integrates R2's robust CT Lung CAD into the Vitrea workflow," said Jay D. Miller, Vital Images' president and chief executive officer. "We're proud to combine these two innovative technologies to advance the clinical workflow."

R2 Technology is the only company to receive FDA pre-market approval for the use of CAD in improving the detection of actionable lung nodules during review of multi-slice CT chest exams. Its CAD algorithms examine a CT chest study and automatically mark areas warranting further examination, thereby enabling increased diagnostic accuracy and physician productivity.

"We are pleased to partner with Vital Images, a leading provider of advanced visualization software, to give radiologists additional flexibility and access to our CT Lung CAD system," said John Pavlidis, R2's president and chief executive officer. "Now, Vitrea customers can benefit from the full power of R2's CT Lung CAD solution in a user interface with which they are familiar from other Vitrea applications. With already more than 100 CT Lung CAD installations, this new integrated solution will only help to increase our CAD's adoption rate among healthcare providers."

About ImageChecker® CT Lung CAD

R2 Technology's ImageChecker® CT Lung CAD application combines innovative lung nodule detection algorithms with a variety of measurement and display tools for efficient and accurate analysis. By serving as the physician's "second pair of eyes," the ImageChecker CT Lung CAD algorithm automatically highlights actionable lung nodules and quickly computes reproducible measurements of detected regions. A recent study in Chest showed that R2's CT Lung CAD system detected actionable lung nodules in 33 percent of CT exams originally read as normal.*
