Welch Allyn Integrates New Fiber Technology to Enhance Performance of CL 300 Surgical Illuminator

Upgraded Illuminator to be Shown at Medica 2002, November 20-23 in Düsseldorf, Germany

Skaneateles Falls, New York, November 12, 2002 - Welch Allyn, Inc.'s Lighting Products Division has upgraded the performance of its high-end fiber optic illuminator, the CL 300, by coupling it with a 3-mm fused fiber optic bundle. When combined, these technologies provide a light source with equivalent power, higher output and twice the lifetime of comparable xenon sources. The upgraded CL 300 will be featured November 20-23 at Medica 2002 in Düsseldorf, Germany at booth A69-1 in the North American Pavilion, Hall 12.

"For many years xenon has been viewed as the premiere fiber optic illumination source for integration into endoscopy equipment," said Doug Rutan, marketing manager for Welch Allyn, Inc.'s Lighting Products Division. "But now the arc lamp technology behind the CL 300, coupled with a new 3-mm fused fiber at the proximal connector, allows the illuminator to provide better performance and a much longer lifetime than comparable xenon sources. These qualities make it an unparalleled value for OEMs to integrate into their medical endoscopic systems."

Welch Allyn's CL 300 consists of a 140 mm x 286 mm x 324 mm metal casing that houses a 290-watt arc lamp and all necessary control electronics and cooling components. "The fiber optic illuminator also features a median lamp life of 1,000 hours, so when compared with the average 500-hour lifespan of a xenon source, replacement costs are really kept to a minimum," said Rutan.

Powered by 100~240V AC, the portable unit features a color temperature of approximately 5,600K and is rugged enough for operation in virtually any medical environment. The illuminator is equipped with an interface directly compatible with STORZ and Olympus fibers, with optional ACMI and Wolf adapters available. Moreover, for easy integration into medical lighting applications, the CL 300 fiber optic illuminator has all relevant medical regulatory approvals.
