Ikanos First to Announce Multi-Mode DSL Solution

Ikanos' SmartLeap® Platform Supports VDSL2, VDSL, ADSL2+, and ADSL on a Per-Port Basis

FREMONT, Calif., Nov. 15 /-- Ikanos Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:IKAN), a leading developer of Fiber Fast(TM) broadband solutions, today announced multi-mode VDSL2, VDSL, ADSL2+, and ADSL support on its SmartLeap® platform, becoming the first VDSL supplier to announce support for all commonly-deployed DSL services on a single line card. With multi-mode DSL capability, network equipment manufacturers can now offer VDSL2 line cards that support new as well as legacy DSL services, thereby simplifying and reducing the cost of network upgrades for their carrier customers.

"Carriers want VDSL2 capabilities to deliver higher bandwidth to their customers in support of new triple play services, but need solutions that allow them to roll out these next-generation services without disrupting existing customers," said Michael Howard, co-founder and principal analyst at Infonetics Research. "We believe the introduction of multi-mode capabilities to the market will greatly stimulate the growth of VDSL2 deployment, both in North America and abroad."

With the availability of multi-mode VDSL2/VDSL/ADSL2+/ADSL solutions, carriers can deploy VDSL2-capable line cards from nodes, remote terminals or central offices without interrupting ADSL or ADSL2+ service to existing customers. Since multi-mode VDSL2 line cards based on Ikanos solutions will support ADSL, ADSL2+, VDSL, or VDSL2 on a per-port basis, these cards should help reduce operating cost, streamline carrier inventories and simplify field operations because all services can be delivered from just one type of line card.

"We are very excited to have created a multi-mode platform supporting both VDSL and legacy ADSL standards," said Dean Grumlose, vice president of marketing at Ikanos. "Due to VDSLs increased complexity over ADSL, we consider VDSL to be a significantly more challenging standard to implement than ADSL. Our ability to leverage our extensive VDSL field experience was the key to creating a solution supporting new as well as existing services. The availability of our universal DSL platform should provide carriers with an attractive alternative to deploying ADSL products."
