Rockwell Automation Expands Network Connectivity of Compact Block (TM) I/O Product Line

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio, April 25, 2002 - To meet the various network needs of industrial automation OEMs and end users, Rockwell Automation has expanded the network connectivity of the CompactBlock(TM) I/O product line. First introduced on DeviceNet(TM), these products are now available on Remote I/O (RIO) and PROFIBUS DP. As with the DeviceNet blocks, these ten new modules have removable terminal blocks (RTB) to save maintenance costs. The DeviceNet versions also include DeviceLogix(TM) Smart Component Technology for faster sense to actuation time and local control.

"CompactBlock is ideal in situations where space is at a premium," said Pat Moyer, product marketing manager, Rockwell Automation. "The new blocks provide the means for users who have RIO as their network of choice to add a few more points. The PROFIBUS DP blocks offer a new option for different applications, especially in Europe where PROFIBUS is a popular device-level network."

CompactBlock I/O base blocks combine the communication adapter, I/O circuitry and terminations into a single package. In addition, the DeviceNet base and expansion blocks are powered by the DeviceNet network, eliminating the need for a separate power supply. Base blocks are available with 4, 8, and 16 I/O points for 24 VDC applications plus expansion blocks with an additional 16 I/O points and terminations. All expansion blocks work with any base block - DeviceNet, Remote I/O or PROFIBUS DP. Together the base and expansion modules provide for end users to expand up to 32 points of I/O per node and distribute their I/O on their plant floor to reduce wiring and maintenance costs. Their compact size allows them to fit into shallow cabinets, operator workstation panels, pushbutton stations or wireways.

Just as the DeviceNet bases are easy to configure using modular EDS files, so are the PROFIBUS DP bases using provided GSD files and any PROFIBUS DP configuration package. The Remote I/O bases do not require any additional software since the configuration is done via DIP switches.

CompactBlock I/O provides higher performance and more benefits than other block I/O products due to its IEC/NEMA type 3+ inputs offering the widest range of compatible sensors; wide range of device power accommodation with 10-30 VDC; hardware watchdog function securing the state of the I/O modules in the event of failure; address switches and autobaud detection easing the network commissioning; and output short-circuit protection protecting outputs in case of accidental miswiring.

The new Remote I/O and PROFIBUS DP CompactBlock I/O blocks are:

- 1791R-16B0 -- RIO, 24 VDC, 16 in sink, base

- 1791R-0B16P -- RIO, 24 VDC, 16 out source, base

- 1791R-8B8P --RIO, 24 VDC, 8 in sink/8 out source, base

- 1791R-4B4P -- RIO, 24 VDC, 4 in sink/4 out source, base

- 1791R-8V8P -- RIO, 24 VDC, 8 in source/8 out sink, base

- 1791P-16B0 -- PROFIBUS, 24 VDC, 16 in sinking, base

- 1791P-0B16P -- PROFIBUS, 24 VDC, 16 out source, base

- 1791P-8B8P -- PROFIBUS, 24 VDC, 8 in sink/8 out source, base

- 1791P-4B4P -- PROFIBUS, 24 VDC, 4 in sink/4 out source, base

- 1791P-8V8P -- PROFIBUS, 24 VDC, 8 in source/8 out sink, base
