New Profibus 12-Channel Analog and Discrete I/O Modules Provide a Low-Cost Decentralized I/O Solution

Acromag to introduce BusWorks(TM) 900PB Series I/O modules at ISA 2002 which provide a direct interface to ProfiBus-DP networks for up to twelve channels in an inch-wide DIN rail package.

Wixom, MI: Acromag's new BusWorks(TM) 900PB Series I/O Modules interface analog and discrete I/O signals directly to a ProfiBus-DP network. The twelve-channel I/O modules do not require a separate bus coupler like block I/O devices to deliver a more cost and space-efficient solution. Priced at only $350 for discrete I/O or $550 for analog I/O, they are very cost-effective for applications requiring several I/O channels and under $30 per channel when optimally configured. Each module is only an inch wide with the highest density footprint available for compact mounting on DIN-rails. The discrete I/O modules are ideal for on/off monitoring and control of industrial devices. Analog I/O modules interface DC voltage or current input signals to the network controller. Flexible power requirements support operation on 12-36V DC or 24V AC power supplies.

The I/O modules provide an isolated ProfiBus-DP network interface which is highly immune to noise and operates dependably over long distances. 900PB units automatically detect the network baud rate and support high-speed communication rates of up to 12M baud. Network addresses are easily set via switches on the modules. The ProfiBus interface also includes optional RTS (request-to-send) direction control. A built-in watchdog timer monitors for network communication problems while self-diagnostic capabilities simplify maintenance and troubleshooting. A failsafe mode can be set to ensure outputs are sent to a safe state if a failure occurs.

Two analog I/O models accept 0-20mA (963PB) or 0-10V DC (964PB) signals in a variety of ranges for greater flexibility in a single unit. All twelve channels are isolated as a group from network and power. 16-bit sigma-delta A/D converters deliver high accuracy for precise measurements.

Three discrete I/O models are available: twelve input channels (981 PB), twelve output channels (982PB), and twelve bidirectional input/output channels (983PB). Individually selectable bidirectional channels let you mix inputs and outputs on one unit to use fewer modules and reduce costs. Input modules transmit discrete level data to other network devices or controllers. The input channels are active-low with a 0-35V DC range and TTL-compatible. Output modules can activate alarms or provide on/off switching. Output channels are open-drain DMOS mosfet switches with a 0-35V DC range for current sinking applications. On the 983PB models, input buffers are connected in tandem with the open-drain outputs for convenient loop-back verification of the output state.

Many other features ensure dependable operation. Acromag's 900PB modules employ the industry-standard Siemens SPC3 intelligent ASIC to handle ProfiBus protocol and communicate with the network. An internal microcontroller has integrated non-volatile memory for reliable storage of configuration parameters and can be reprogrammed repeatedly. And to visually confirm proper operation, LEDs indicate power, network activity, and individual channel status. The units are pending certification by the ProfiBus PNO, as well as CE approvals and UL/cUL listings.
