I/O Module and Safety Monitor suit Category 4 operation.

Press Release Summary:

Flexible I/O module S22.5F and safety monitor unify safety and standard technology on AS-interface bus. S22.5F, with IP20 degree protection, has 2 inputs that enable safe link to signals in control cabinet. Safety monitor offers integrated on- and off-delays as well as pulse functions. Momentary shutdowns are saved in buffer memory, logical functions can be linked with each other and cascaded, and safety-related components can be configured virtually.

Original Press Release:

New System Components for Safety at Work

Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) is extending its modular Safety at Work system with the flexible I/O module S22.5F and the new improved safety monitor. The "Safety at Work" concept unifies safety technology and standard technology on the AS-interface bus.

The flexible I/O module S22.5 supplements the AS-Interface control cabinet module "SlimLine". This module series with degree of protection IP20 generates space in the control cabinet or in distributed cabinets on site. The modules have a slim design and are equipped with two inputs which enable a safe link to signals in the control cabinet. During operation up to Category 2, both inputs can be occupied separately. The module has a two-channel input for operation in Category 4.

The new improved safety monitor is a further development of the existing safety monitor with new functions for complex applications. To permit the configuration of such applications in the safety monitor, its working memory capacity was increased. Momentary shutdowns are saved in a buffer memory for diagnostic purposes. Logical functions can be linked with each other and cascaded. In this case, additional timers are identical to the time relay. Thus on- and off-delays and pulse functions are integrated.

Safety-related components can now be configured virtually thanks to the deactivation function of the monitoring blocks or dummy blocks. When the components are actually integrated into the system, one configuration can be used for different variants of a plant without the need for modifications. All functions are designed for Category 4 according to EN954-1. Safety monitor, monitoring and evaluation unit as well as slaves are TUV certified to IEC61508 and NRTL.
